Safari text overlapping problem

I have an issue, rather than a real problem, with text on some web pages being overlapped with or by other text. In some cases the text appears to have, for example, the lower half of each character missing. It is irritating and makes the text almost illegible in some cases. I have searched on this forum but only found an unresolved thread from 2008. I am hoping someone can help.

I have a 2014 Mac Air running Mavericks.

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Hi Tom - many thanks for your reply. My apologies for not getting back sooner. The problem still exists. I checked FontBook as you suggested but the only duplicates that I could see were actually variations, such as showing a font italicised. Can you please tell me how to use the camera icon to post a screenshot as I do not know how to do that.

Many thanks, Nick.
