System time (Clock) changes on iPhone 5c

Hi everybody,

a friend recently encounters a very strange problem with his iPhone 5c. Without any reason, the clock time on the phone changes. Not full-hours-wise (like a wrong time zone) but apparently completely arbitrary - the clock then displays completely wrong times. Sometimes the clock continues running from that wrong time, sometimes it remains static for a while on a particular time. This is of course a real pain, particularly if the iPhone should be used as an alarm clock...

The phenomenon is completely independent from the "set automatically" setting in "date & time" - it even occurs if the time was set manually. It is also independent from the phone being logged into a Wifi network or if it's just online in a mobile network. It has also nothing to do with synchronizing with a PC that has a wrong system time (this appears to be the most frequently cited comment in this issue).

Sometimes it helps for a couple of minutes if "set automatically" in "date & time" is switched off and on again. Sometimes! ;-) And even if it helps and the time gets set correctly, it only takes a couple of minutes and the clock show a wrong time again.

We have tried all kinds of stuff to solve the problem: Stop all running apps (in case on of it has gone bonkers). Switch the phone off and on again. Switch flight mode off and on. Switch Wifi off and on. Switch mobile data off and on. Let the battery run completely empty, then recharge and switch the phone on again. All to no avail... The last desperate try (which I really hoped would be successful) was a hard reset (set back to factory settings via cable and iTunes and then replay the last backup). The time was ok after that - but just for a few minutes, then it changed again...

Has anybody any idea of what this strange behavior could be all about? Anybody had a similar problem? Anybody with a genius (sic!) solution? Or at least a hint what else we could try?!

Oh yes, the phone runs iOS 8.1.2 and is about 15 months old - bought directly at German Telekom.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Best regards,

TCF

I have reinstalled the IOS from recovery mode and restored the backup, but doubt this is a profile or software related issue. My user brought this to me without explaining that she had 'dropped it on the floor' the day previously. It is also having trouble staying connected to Wifi here at the office. I would say that a large majority of these issue are caused by faulty hardware but that's from my extremely limited experience with these devices. I am not saying that each poster here must have dropped their phone and there may be some cause for action on Apples part as it seems awfully strange that so phones are failing in the same manner and Apple has said nothing about it.

I advised my 5C destroyer to stop dropping her phone and then after she had a good cry over the thing, to go get a new phone. CODB in this day and age.

iPhone 5c keeps forgetting the time, randomly being off anywhere from 15 minutes to 18 hours. tried both 'Set time automatically' and 'manual'. within 30 mi - 1 hr, the time will be off again. weird behavior. if this was a computer I would say bad CMOS battery but I don't think the iPhone has such a thing. the regular battery still holds power for 8-10 hrs per day, depending on usage.

so far I have:

1) restarted numerous times

2) did a network reset

3) upgrade to 9.3.4 and then 9.3.5

4) restore from backup

Nothing seems to work.

On top of that my Bluetooth stopped working. When I go to Settings -> Bluetooth I just see a spinning wheel but no devices or search for new devices. Very frustrating.

And about dropping the phone on the floor, even if this would be the cause, who has never dropped their phone?! Or maybe your kid dropped it, or your friend... I mean, these phones are not supposed to all break in the same manner and making them unusable because of a timing issue caused by dropping it! If that is the case, it is still a poor manufacturing on Apple's part and they should me blamed. What other phone is know to have the same problem? Not much. Is it that no other phone has never been dropped before?! It will still break with time, these iPhones 5C are flawed and Apple really should start a replacement program.

Hey everyone,

It amazes me too that there has been no acknowledgement by Apple on this obviously widespread issue! And it seems to have begun after the warranty period was up, but is obviously a MAJOR flaw in the iPhone 5C.

My daughter's iPhone 5C had all of these problems.

BTW, when the time doesn't work that causes problems with Bluetooth and WiFi, as these services require time synchronization to operate, so these are caused by one problem--the internal clock! (IMHO)

I reset many times, finally to factory settings, and nothing worked.

I called Apple and they said it was caused by my 3G carrier (Verizon for that one) and I should call them. Knowing it was a waste of time, I did call and got transferred to the "iPhone expert". He acknowledged that Apple had been telling people that it was a carrier problem, but said it was not. (Of course this is evidenced by the fact that it happens on multiple carriers.)

I went to the Apple Store and they acted like they hadn't heard of a problem (I told them about all the threads, and still apparent bewilderment.). We walked through all the resets and the genius said I should not add any apps at all and see if it would keep the time. As usual, it started out OK, so he was hoping I'd leave so he could move on to the next customer and hope I forget or give up. I said I'd come right back when (not if) it happened and he agreed. Sure enough, about 20 minutes later, it happens, and I came back, catching him just before he was going to take a break. He brought one more senior tech to look at it, who decided that they would replace it with a refurbished model EVEN THOUGH it was out of warranty (and of course my having replaced the broken screen several times as it was my clumsy daughter's).

(Accidentally hit the reply button before finished)

Of course, the replacement "fixed" the problem.

However, my stepdaughter, who also had an iPhone 5C (she's in Brazil and visits here in the US, so uses Claro in Brazil and T-Mobile in the US) had the SAME problem. After resetting to factory and seeing the same problem, we took it to the Apple Store. They analyzed it in the back, and then came out and said because the screen had been replaced outside of Apple, that further voided the already expired warranty(!). The other phone screen had been replaced many times, and that wasn't an issue! Further, this problem has NOTHING to do with the screen. It is most likely a hardware flaw, but definitely an internal Apple iPhone 5C flaw that is widespread and not acceptable to hide behind a 1 year "warranty" for.

They HAVE to know about this, and as many suggest, are ignoring it so they never had to deal with the cost of a recall. They just wanted the model to have become old e

nough that it's moot.

Pretty crappy!
