I have noticed that when Garageband is active in memory (even if not being used), my MacBook Pro (2011) begins to get very hot by the middle of the hinge and the battery discharges more rapidly than usual.
Has anyone experienced this before?
What can be done about it?

Click on Track in the menu bar, then track header and choose Show Track Lock. This will let you lock tracks, rendering a audio file including any effects this way it just plays back a audio file and does not have to processes effects in real time.
I'm assuming the fans are working and you don't have a any processes hanging up. Your Mac is running hot but not overheating if it were it would shut down. There are a few things that will get hot when doing work the processor, hard drive and battery. Buy using the power supply when recording will cut down on the battery heating, Locking tracks that are not being used can cut down on processor demand and adding more RAM will cut down on hard drive reads.

Yes fans are good and no processes have hung up.
I get all that you are saying about using the the power cable, but I'm not sue what "locking tracks" means.
I have the maximum of 8GB of memory.

I forgot to say that I have used GB quite a bit but this is the first time that I had not closed it out of memory as soon as I cleared it out the heat went. I was just concerned that the Mac had developed a fault as I have only been a Mac convert for less than a year.
