late 2013 Mac Pro and Samsung 4K U32D970Q Problems

I'm at my wits end. I really wish 4K displays were truly plug-n-play with new Macs.

I purchased a Samsung 4K U32D970Q from Amazon due to a couple positive reviews from users stating it works with their 2013 MP. It's a beautiful screen, much better uniformity than the LG 4K I sent back but it has a huge problem with random flickering. And by flickering I mean while watching videos, scrolling a website quickly the screen distorts and "blinks/flickers" momentarily then goes back to normal. I've tried a different DisplayPort>mDP cable along with the provided cables and same issue. The monitor is running SST at 60Hz.

You can see a video I made showing the blinking/flicker http://youtu.be/Rj8QwgzogqQ

This is actually my 2nd monitor as I did an exchange with Amazon same issue. I tried to contact Samsung and what a joke that support is. I get a guy who said he has no idea then sent me a firmware update list... that hasn't been updated since last March. No help.

I've already reset pram and smc, tried different TB ports without any luck.

Is it just wise to stick to the officially supported, and very expensive, list of 4K monitors or go QHD and wait for the 2016 MP for true 4K+ support?

Wonder what's the reason Apple can't produce one for use with my MacPro?

I think you dropped the word YET in your comment above.

I think you're an optimist! That's not bad. I hope you're right!

But!

I think the market and profit potential for a 5K monitor (even a 4K one) just isn't good enough for Apple. They're no longer a computer company. They can't sell millions and millions of them to the millennials, fan boys, India, and China.

Correct. That is now reflected in the May 29 2015 update to

Finally I asked AppleCare about a monitor fitting to MacPro. They told me, that OS 10.10.3 is ready for the 5K Monitor from DELL (UP2715K).

There are tests in youtube. The display doens't look bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuOz9vnS4r8

There are different displays mentioned in several different sections of the article lllaass referenced:

Dual-Cable Displays

Some displays with resolutions higher than 4K require two DisplayPort cables to connect the display at full resolution. With OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later, the Dell UP2715K 27-inch 5K display is supported on the following Mac computers:

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)
  • iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X

Ah, so!

Wonder why it's not in a 'list' format like the other recommendations?

Thanks anyway! I'll check this one out.

CaptCanuck:

Sorry, 'Loving your new Mac Pro' is not acceptable.😝

Can't you see that others are having problems? Have you no sympathy? It MUST be an inherently BAD system.😝You CAN"T really be having a pleasant experience!

😝Remember you have only 14 days to return it to Apple for a refund. Oops, 13 days left if you have had it for a day. Better start heading for the Store now.😝
