As the title says, iTunes keeps opening itself at random times, and it's getting really annoying, is there a way to set iTunes not to open unless I want to open it?

thanks, I have followed your advice and unchecked auto updates now.
For your information, my laptop started opening Itunes randomly after I
had listened to Spotify with bluetooth on my ipad -
as all have said this is most annoying.
Apple said there's nothing you can do to stop iTunes from launching if you "touch" the earbud controls when watching a video etc.
Another annoying OSX thing cannot stop... Spotlight connecting to Internet to search... UGH
I have a MacBook Pro and I disabled that. It's in settings but I don't remember how to change it. Let me look to see if I can remember.

You're welcome! I can't find that in the settings anymore. But does yours open when your phone is connected or is it other times? If it's when your phone is plugged in I can fix that.
Sadly it isn't, it will open at random times likes when I'm watching a video, or something else, I don't do anything to provoke it (or I don't think I do)

Possible causes of this issue include:
I have the apple headphones which let you change the volume, that isn't switching tracks but do you think that it might be causing it?
Disconnect and test.

The same thing just happened to me. Working on a deadline editing in Final Cut and iTunes keeps playing "Hells Bells." I totally lost it. Who was the genius that thought automatically opening iTunes just because I plug in headphones????
