Missing iCloud documents

Several months ago I had an icon in my Finders Favorites, iCloud. That has changed to iCloud Drive. I had saved about 30 text files in iCloud. Now when I click on the iCloud Drive icon in finder I am asked to upgrade to iCloud Drive, and warned that doing so will delete any documents in iCloud. While talking to Apple Care I went from my iMac to my MacBook Air, opened Finder and found iCloud at the top of the Favorites column. I click on this icon and all my missing txt files appeared. I dragged one to my desktop. I planned to go back to my MBA in an hour or so and drag the remaining files to folder on my HD. After an hour or so the iCloud icon had disappeared in Finder on my MBS and had been replaced with in iCloud Drive icon. Both my Macs are running the latest version of Yosemite 10.10.1.

Where are my files stored in iCloud??

Léonie,

The files I saved to iCloud last fall an before were text files and were created with Text Edit. When saving a file created with Text Edit I had the option of saving to iCloud. That is no longer the case. I am finding it hard to believe that no one either at Apple (2 senior advisors so far) or anyone in this Community knows what happen to files stored in iCloud.

I don't have iCloud Drive activated so I do not see any of the iCloud Drive icons you have. iCloud Drive is not iCloud. My missing documents were saved in iCloud.

Then I misunderstood you. I though you had upgraded your Apple ID to iCloud Drive at least on one of your devices.

If you enabled iCloud Drive on any device you own for your Apple ID, there is no way back. You cannot revert to Documents in the Cloud, even if you disable iCloud Drive again. iCloud Documents will be gone and cannot be reactivated for that AppleID.

Yes you could, but when you access them later you did that through the file chooser menu. You can see the file chooser menu when you first open an app or when you press ⌘O from that app, it looks a bit like the finder but it isn't.

I definitely had this icon as the first icon on the favorites column of Finder.

If you were using iCloud before iCloud Drive then I think you are mistaken

We know it's not the same, I also don't think it says it will delete documents if you upgrade to iCloud Drive, just that you won't be able to sync with older operating systems. If you haven't upgraded you should still have the old version working, but please be assured it never had a default icon in the Finder.

I had this issue too.


Unfortunately it will not be resolved here - you have to open a case with Apple Support.


Files on (old) iCloud do not "migrate" to iCloud Drive.


My issue was that when I upgraded my Mac to OS 10.10, it upgraded to iCloud Drive.


All my docs were gone.


Via the browser interface (iCloud.com), I could see Pages/Numbers/Keynote documents, but could not add, edit or delete.

Sorry, that's quite wrong.

Unfortunately it will not be resolved here - you have to open a case with Apple Support.

If you really have had documents deleted, neither Apple or anyone here can help you, if they haven't been deleted, you don't need Apple's help.

That's incorrect, please take a look at this article, and in particular the bit that says:

If you upgrade to iCloud Drive now:

  • Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8, Macs with OS X Yosemite, PCs with iCloud for Windows, and iCloud.com.
  • Your documents will no longer keep up to date on devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
My issue was that when I upgraded my Mac to OS 10.10, it upgraded to iCloud Drive.

The OP states they haven't updated to iCloud Drive, so you don't have the same issue, despite your statement to the contrary.

Actually, Winston, you're misinformed.


My files were "locked", meaning I could not add/edit/delete files.


I went in as far as to escalate to Apple Executive relations because no one - not a single L1, L2, or L3 - could explain what was going on. I have a case (electronic) paper trail about 30 pages long.


Oh, and it was right in the middle of testing many of the Cloud sharing services for a popular publication, so I have experience in this area.


And either I mistyped or you misinterpreted - my account WAS upgraded to iCloud Drive (when I moved to Yosemite) while my mobile devices - and the Web interface - were not there yet. I can understand (partially) issues with iOS 7 at the time, but not the Web interface.


There is a bug. Unfortunately FAQ's like the one you posted doesn't solve bugs.

No, actually you are complicating a situation by providing misinformation about something that has nothing to do with the OP issues.


1. Nobody here except you has mentioned locked files, the point being your issue is nothing to do with the OP's.

2. I know your account WAS upgraded to iCloud drive because I bothered to read what you wrote, the problem is that you haven't read what the OP wrote, because they HAVE NOT (or at least have said they have not) upgraded to iCloud Drive, the point being your issue is nothing to do with the OP's.

3. The OP is looking for documents in the Finder and not in a "web interface", the point being your issue is nothing to do with the OP's.

4. No-ones iCloud is upgraded to iCloud Drive automatically, the user has to initiate the upgrade.

5. There is no bug, there will be reasons specific to your situation that caused a problem, however that problem has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's problem here.
