I use iDVD on my old 24" intell iMac with OS 10.6.8 all the time, but when used with my new iMac with OS 10.10.5, it seems to be working ok until it starts to burn, then it errors out.

I thought it was a problem with the external Apple DVD drive, but it burns everyting else ok.

I'm glad I kept the old iMac, but creates a problem because my Final Cut Pro movie with chapters is on the new iMac. I have to move the mov file with all the JPEGs associated with it to the old computer to use iDVD.

If my video does not contain chapters, I use Toast eleven to burn disk. I tried its theme and chapter options, but no comparison to iDVD.

This is how to:

At a minimum, I would suggest partitioning your drive to allow you to have both OS operating just in case something goes amiss.

OR, better still, use a completely different drive and clean install to that, then use this one as the boot/startup drive.

What can happen over time and overwriting OS on top of OS is your latest one inherits all your good stuff and settings but also unwanted baggage and gremlins.

A benefit of a clean install means no inherited issues from the past.

It appears that stumbleone has the answer. My dad's old home movies, has no sound, and I get the error when burning DVD or image.

If I place a .mov video file that contains audio into iDVD, I get no error burning DVD or image.

For the time being, I think I will add silenced audo to the old 8mm movie.

I use Super Dupper to back up as a start up drive. The hassle with doing a clean install, would be getting my desktop back the way I like it.

Thanks for this info, Al. I did not know that until I read your post. (And just to clarify, I know you mean that for iDVD the audio and video need to be multiplexed (i'e;, "muxed").)

Russ

I've never used just a video only Project before and that having an audioless track variety would create an issue.

It seems that when one part is missing for the final multiplexed result iDVD looses the plot.

I learn something everyday around here as well. 🙂

Apologize for jumping in and a bit off topic from the OP question, but my experience here may be of interest.

Among many other trials and errors, I ran the following tests:

I ran FCPX 10.2.2 and created a 24 second QT .mov, 1280 x 720, 60p, ProRes 422 in two versions - one with an embedded audio track (W/A) and then the same video file without audio (W/O-A). The audio was a song off iTunes, m4A, 44.1 KHz.

I exported those with default settings.

I attempted to make a disk image with iDVD 7.1.2 of both of these using the "Sunflower" theme.

Results as follows:

With my 27" late 2012 iMac running OS X 10.10.5 the W/A movie encoded and multiplexed successfully and gave a disk image that could be opened and played.

The same setup, and the W/O-A got an encoding error and stopped. Totally repeatable.

I booted up the iMac from a previously cloned backup drive with 10.10.4 running.

Both movies, with and without audio, encoded and played successfully.

To make a long story short, I've run a number of other tests along these lines, lots of variations, and 10.10.4 has no problems but for me iDVD under 10.10.5 will not encode a video file without an audio track.

I believe something has changed in the OS and that it's not an FCP X or iDVD issue.

Thanks for the info and testing.

I'm not at all surprised.

As newer Operating systems emerge iDVD and others will get further away from the original OSs they were intended to operate with.

Last time I used iDVD Chapter Markers names were not entered correctly, the markers were there without actual names.

Names required re-typing into the Chapter Marker fields.

No doubt there will be other oddities as time goes on.

I still use iDVD and made a post about this earlier this year. Unfortunately, Apple thinks it does not need to incorporate a DVD menu option into Final Cut X. I export an 720p HD file (for apple devices) from final cut. It isn't large and clunky like the propres files are. I import the video file (with chapter markers made in FCPX) into iDVD and make the menu with songs, chapter names, AND slideshow. I keep it under 6 chapters so it does not waste space and create a second chapter menu screen. If you are importing photos, there is a really nasty bug where the photos become black and white once on iDVD. I have done extensive research and testing into this, as it affects my business. I have narrowed it to down to NVIDIA cards rendering in iDVD. Easiest work around is to make a video slideshow in another app, literally any other slideshow app on the mac, and then import the slideshow into iDVD as a video file and just rename it as slideshow. As for the person having issues with burning the discs, ALWAYS create disk image first and then burn the disk in disk utility. File > Save as Disk Image. I always burn Dual Layers by the way.

If someone has connections at apple, please urge them to incorporate DVD/BluRay menu options into FCPX. iDVD menus look great in my opinion, even 7 years later. =/

I also use iDVD to burn my videos. I love the templates and its simplicity to use and customize! I make wedding DVDs and sometimes when I give a client a DVD they sometimes have issues during playback on their device. Do you ever have any issues with playback on your dvd player or video game console? It seems as if not too many people have dvd players anymore, but they have video game consoles they use such as PS3, PS4 and Xbox. During playback the dvd skips or freezes, and while playing on a mac computer it shows error message "skipping over damaged area." Its not damaged since its a new dvd, but I'm wondering if its the actual iDVD software that might have a glitch. Do you have similar problems?
