Epson USB or USB not appearing as an option in Printer Set Up Utility

I am trying to get my Epson Stylus RX510 (RX500 outside Australia) multi function printer to work with my MacBook Pro. I have the latest, correct Intel drivers installed (3.0aEs and scanner software C SPC3_PCF_OSX_27w41). When I connect via USB and select "Add" in Printer Setup Utility, the printer shows up but the drivers do not appear.

The "Auto" option is greyed out.

There is no option for USB or Epson USB available. I think this is the key but...

Having spent days trying to resolve this, speaking to Epson and Apple techs, I still have no luck. This is what I have done so far:

- Unplugged the printer from the MacBook
- Reset Print Setup Utility
- repaired permissions
- in Command "I" I have selected "Open using Rosetta"
- uninstalled all the old Epson drivers
- reinstalled the new drivers
- run Disk Utilty (no problems found)
- run printer setup repair
- reinstalled Mac OS X without the old epson drivers and gimp drivers
- reinstalled the new drivers again - no luck.
- went to the Epson USA site and downloaded the drivers for the RX500 instead of the RX510 - still no luck.
- cried!!!! (kidding - but almost made everyone around me cry).

Incidentally, printer is working perfectly when connected to my G4 with the old drivers, so it isn't a printer problem or dodgy USB cable.

Epson tech says there is nothing wrong with the drivers and I have done everthing correctly.

Apple tech says I have done everything they would tell me to do and to post it in discussions. Here's hoping one of you gurus can help me please.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.7), Currently updating to 10.4.8 as this is being posted.

No luck. Files are all installed now and I ran PSR and it says all is ok.

Epson USB (or USB) still does not appear as an option.

In Command "I" (get info) for PSU application, please could you let me know what plugins should appear in this list? Should plugins automatically be added to this list, or do I need to add them?

Thank you so much for trying to help Matt.

If PSR says all is OK, I will presume that you have all the plugins installed for Printer Setup Utility. They should become active as they are added unless you take steps to disable them.

I am a bit at a loss as to how to direct you. In rereading the entire thread, one thing did pop out at me. You had mentioned that you tried running Printer Setup Utility with Rosetta. If you are using the Intel drivers (v3.0zES) for the printer, please make sure that you are NOT running PSU with Rosetta. With the Intel drivers, PSU should be allowed to run natively.

Unfortunately, the Intel driver installer will not let me install those files on my PPC computer. I therefore cannot look over the file structure and determine what files may be to blame. PSR will be no help here. It only deals with the printing system part of OS X.

You mentioned that you have done a new install of the system. That is usually the last ditch effort. The only thing we haven't tried is for you to create a new administrator account and try installing the printer from the new account. That would eliminate any sort of corruption involved with your current user account that may be playing a part in this issue. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped.

Hi Matt
I have a problem also. I have accidentally removed all the printers of my printer set up utility and I can not seem to put them back. The printer is an epson stylus photo R800. I have had this problem before when I upgraded to Tiger but I cant remember how I solved it. The drop down menu for all the printer options is just not there any more. I have tried down loading and reinstalling the driver software but to no avail. HELP!!!
There used to be options for boarderless, continuous, cd etc but now there is only one option.

Has anyone found a way around this problem yet. I am having the same issue with getting an Epson RX650 print driver to work on an Intel G5. Have uninstalled the CD print driver and installed the latest driver from the Epson site, followed the suggestions from this thread and many phone calls to Epson and Apple support with no luck.

The printer works fine on a PC.

I have returned the mac and the printer to the Apple retailer for them to have a go....nothing! They couldnt get the printer working on other Intel mac mahines in their store either.

Epson say its a problem with OSX on intel macs and Apple say its a problem with the Epson intel driver's. I suspect the later.

I've got the mac back now but they kept the printer to show their Epson rep's the problem and am waiting to here back from them.......

In my opinion, this is a case where the front line people from both Epson and Apple are "reading from the script". They have no knowledge of what is going on behind the scenes between the Epson and Apple engineers.

In my opinion, it is ultimately the device manufacturer (Epson in this case) that has to decide to support a particular platform (Mac OS X) and bear the burden of getting the device to work. Even if that means working around bugs in OS X. On the other hand, if there are lingering bugs in OS X that don't get fixed, the manufacturer may drop support for the platform. It is a two way street.

Your post provides the most definite proof that there is a software problem involved here. Please post back with anything you learn.
