Why am I not seeing Apple TV on my smart tv?

I have a new Vizio smart TV (Model # M422i-B1). I have a new Apple TV, primarily to be able to stream from my Mac Mini (OS 10.10.1). The TV works just fine. When I installed the Apple TV and connected it to the TV via HDMI, the TV recognized something was connected in the input list but will only give me a black screen when I choose that input. The Apple TV remote control seems to work, as the Apple TV blinks the indicator light once for each time I use a button on the remote. I can't call up the menu as the screen remains black. I've tried connecting modem-router-Apple TV via ethernet. I've tried modem-Airport Extreme-Apple TV via ethernet. When I use wi-fi to connect the Vizio, it shows a strong signal from my home network. I went through the standard reboot of modem, router, airport extreme, Apple TV and Vizio TV. Nothing I've tried works. What am I missing? FYI: I haven't contacted Vizio yet.

Apple TV, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
