how can i find all devices on my home network?
on my old pc with windows 7, I could just examine my home network and see all connected devices such as the router. can i do this with my mac air?

WakeOnLan does a very good job of finding every active device on a given LAN

Also Bonjour Browser is good for finding any device that is advertising using Bonjour (or ZeroConf) protocols
Flame is another utility that will display Bonjour services.
You can see things that offer some type of service (like file sharing) in the sidebar of Finder.
Your try router should show you everything connected to it, but maybe only by MAC or IP.
