MacBook Pro mgx72ll/a overheating with Parallels

So I recently purchased a brand new 13'' MacBook Pro Retina(Late 2014).I am running OSx 10.9.5. I have a Windows 8.1 Pro VM, using Parallels 10, on it. (I gave the VM 4GB ram) I want to use the VM to play a few throwback games i.e., CidCiv, Backyard baseball, myst. I haven't played any games on it though, because doing a menial task, such as watching a youtube video in chrome, on the VM increases the temperature dramatically.

Base Temp (no vm running): 35°c - 40°c

Temp After starting Parallels: 60°c - 65°c

Watching Youtube Video on chrome in Parallels: 90°c - 100°c

While watching video fan was only going up to a bout 2000 rpm and temp was staying between 85°c - 90°c. So, I manually turned up fan speed to 4000 and that only brought temp down to a bout 70°c, keep in mind all I'm doing is watching a video.

My question is, is this normal? If not, could this be a hardware issue, software issue, or both?

Hi!

I have - as far as I have correctly observed my MBP's (15'' Retina, late 2014) behaviour - the same problem and questions...

Is it normal for Parallels 10 with Win 8.1 to generate such high temperatures - even when playing Win 8.1 games (e.g. Asphalt 8 etc...)?

Is it harmful for the CPU / GPU or motherboard?...

What should we change in the settings of the Parallels VM or MBP?...

Please inform me if you have an answer!

Thanks!

Regards,

LXD

This reply is to all. Running parallels can cause overheating because you are running both operating systems at the same time. Adding more ram can help to some degree. If you wish to run windows, why not just use boot camp =, so as to be only running for one operating system at a time. Parellels allows you to run multiple Operating systems on the same computer at the same time , such as running mac, windows, and linux together.
