iphone 5S no text alert sound

I set my Sound for being alerted to incoming text messages on my phone 5s. It worked on the first message I received. It has not worked since. I have changed the sound several times and each time it works on the first message I receive but is silent on all further texts. Why do so many of my friends with iPhones have to complain for the same reason about text alert sounds? In the past I had Samsung Galaxies: Everything worked on a Samsung. Something always goes wrong with an Apple and that should not be so. I love Apple but why doesn't the text alert sound work. I miss so many messages: you can't keep looking at your phone all the time to see if a text has arrived.

7.0.3 is pretty dated at this point. The 5S is capable of running the most current firmware. If you're set on not upgrading, my advice would be to double click the home button and end all tasks in addition to holding down the home button and the power button simultaneously to reset the device. If that doesn't work my suggestion would be to upgrade the firmware. In the most current update the option for a 2nd notification has been done away with. I'm not so sure if that's what you're referring to but, in essence, the first message you get from a contact is supposed to trigger a sound tone. However a repeat notification of the same message has been disabled. In any event, a second message from the same contact should make sound.

Actually, this is incorrect. You can set a Messages to alert you up to 10 times if you do not look at the message. It's right where it has always been: Settings>Notifications>Messages>Repeat Alert.

To Sognistrada and Meg St Clair and all who have shown an interest in my text message alert problem:

There is something quite mysterious and magical afoot in this Apple forum. It seems that when I post a problem with my iPhone 5S or my iMac or my iPad2 it completely disappears within 24 hours and everything is hunky dory again. Is there an unseen hand which reaches out into your phone or iPad and re-rights wrongs? I ask because I have made no adjustments at all on my phone, or gone into Settings, but all my text messages are sounding the alert now. It really is extraordinary. I have set the alert tone for "cricket" so everywhere I go there is now a chirp chirp chirp serenade and I am happy indeed. Whoever has done this for me, thank you very much. Regards to all, fernbank30
