how do you disable audio recording in the text messages?

When holding my iphone 6+ idly in my right hand (and I am right handed) my thumb rests at the bottom right corner of the screen - an accidental swipe up from there is a common enough occurrence. If I had just sent a text and forgot to hit the home button or sleep my phone (which does happen occasionally) and the gesture in question happened - it is possible that I might inadvertently record a conversation and send it unknowingly. This could be potentially (and was in actuality) VERY awkward at best! 🙂

Is there currently any way to turn this feature off or move the location of the button?

If not, is a solution in the works?

If not can I suggest that Apple get on that ASAP?!?!?

Talk about your technology potentially detonating an emotional bomb in your life... I would think that from a business perspective the liability factor would be high enough that it would be a priority to fix this "bug"/oversight on Apple's part. 😮

Any and all help and/or suggestions are appreciated - I am not willing to "jail-break" my phone and I need a solution other than "be more careful" or "change how you hold your phone" (obviously in the meantime I will have to work on both of those things).

Thanks!

I didn't receive a call. I was sending a text, forgot to sleep the screen or close the messaging app. Was holding the phone in my right hand with my thumb resting on the bottom edge of the screen (on the mic button) and then must have swiped up when I set the phone down. The end result was that the conversation taking place in the room was recorded and then sent . Not the end of the world but I could imagine a situation when it could be a big deal especially given Murphy's law - any thing that can go wrong will.

It's basically the equivalent of a text message butt dial 🙂

Thank you to all the helpful suggestions and posters, I really appreciate the support from the "Apple support community". Less appreciation goes out to the "Apple critical observation community" I hadn't really thought of it in terms of "fault", "borrowing trouble" or that there was a "problem" with anyone or anything-just had a situation arise that I was hoping to avoid easily in the future 😉 Big thank you again to razmee209 for succinctly posting the requested information!!!

Recording an audio message is different than sending a speech to text text. The microphone is at the edge of the screen to the right, in the message field. It is super easy to send a voice recording accidentally, especially if you are in the middle of reading a text and get interrupted by a live person. Your thumb barely has to be on the screen and a slight flick upwards sends the message without even a "Are you sure?" Kind of confirmation. I have sent at least two voice messages and have had a few sent to me. It isn't "borrowing trouble."

Yes, you will need to work on them, because that is the only viable solution. Of course if you leave an app open and touch the screen, something is likely to happen (or even if you do not have an app open). Its a touch screen. That doesn't apply to just the Messages app, but to any app. Its the equivalent of resting our hands or elbow on a keyboard. Don't do it.

You forget to close off the screen when you are done using it and this somehow Apple's fault? What you need to do is remember how to use the phone - and ASAP I might add. The problem is not with the phone.

In order to record an audio message in the Messages app, you have to press and hold the microphone. Then, you have to swipe up to send. It doesn't strike me as something especially easy to do accidentally. If I hold the phone in my right hand (which, being right handed, I rarely do), I can barely get my thumb down to that corner. I have to make a concerted effort to bend it inward. If my hand is relaxed, my thumb is nowhere near that button. I think you're borrowning trouble.

Submit your feedback and, in the interim, train yourself to tap the power button when you're not going to be actively using the phone. It will save battery life, too.

Lol! I like the keyboard analogy - good point - I will definitely make an effort not to (and usually I am pretty good about that). Since I operate under the warning of Murphy's law, it would safer to be able to turn it off - I know there are jailbreaks that enable you to turn it off but I really don't want to do that. Until it becomes customizable I'll just have to stay off of autopilot when using my tech - I guess you could get an email "butt dial" leaning on the keyboard too 🙂

Interesting that one can deny permission for the mic to Whatsapp, Telegram etc through Privacy but not the native messaging app

Never thought about that until today - ah well

The built in, Apple made apps can access all of the private APIs, and are generally, fairly tightly integrated. As they are essentially part of iOS, Apple considers, I would imagine, less risk of privacy issues when they share information. I don't believe they're looking at it from the same perspective as the OP, hence the suggestion to submit feedback. I think Apple is more concerned about the security implications of allowing WhatsApp to access parts of the system than it is concerned about people inadvertently doing something potentially embarrassing.

I am also having the similar problem. This is becoming very common and wierd that while typing messages in whatsapp any one can easily press the recording option unknowingly and it sends to audio message so quick that sometimes you don't even notice it properly. It creates an awkward situation specially it happens in one of your official whatsapp group.

There should be a solution built ASAP to it to disable it.

You must not have read my post, which makes it quite clear that I understand that recording is different than speech to text and where the button is. Despite the fact that, at the time I wrote that post I was supporting a very large number of iPhones, I've never sent one myself or had anyone else send one.

Your current options are to 1) send feedback to Apple and 2) pay attention to what you're doing until your muscle memory makes it less likely that you make the mistake.

Best of luck.
