imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance 🙂

I agree. Not hardware, It's something in the validation of our AppleIDs. I have seen one person have success with a new ID but everyone else who has tried it has been unsuccessful.

i still haven't heard back from my senior tech. It's been a week since my account was put into test mode. I try signing in every few days but no luck yet.

This is quite pathetic from such a large supposed trusted manufacturer, its pretty obvious to me its a problem from Apples end, i could go on but ive had exactly the same problem as i have read on here, been onto apple who acknowledged it was their fault and it would soon be fixed, but this was around 2 weeks ago now and nothing as yet. I have spent around £2500 on apple products and not one of them will now sign into either imessage or facetime. The top and bottom of it all is that they have sold me products that are not fit for purpose and if this is not sorted fast I will seriously think about getting rid !!!!

They haven't told me it was an Apple problem outright, but when I told them that my friend's AppleID works on my iPad but mine won't work on her iPad (for FaceTime and iMessage) he did say it sounded like it wasn't device related. I don't know what else to do but ask anyone I see here that has this problem to call into AppleCare. Squeaky wheel and all that.

Well... bought ipad mini 3 with lte 3 days ago and signed her up with an apple ID. First feature I wanted to demonstrate to her is iMessage. Have spoken to 5 different apple rep, via phone, in person, chat. All claim they have never see an issue like this.

My gift to my wife is a defective product with a sympathetic shrug from apple in liue of actual support.

My apple ID works fine on her new iPad.

Her new ID works fine on my iphone but not her iPad.

I tried creating a new ID. No luck.

Been escalated to engineering but judging by this thread I should not expect a solution anytime soon.

Her first apple device is a major fail.

So much for "it just works"

That's why I keep telling people to call AppleCare and post here. So many reps insist they have never seen this before. My reps admitted they see this a few times a week but still couldn't figure out the current problem. Mine is still in Engineering.

A problem seems to crop up after pretty much every upgrade if you just look back at the iMessage and FaceTime posts here. But I have no way of knowing if it's the same problem or a new one every time. I have a feeling the current problem isn't related to previous (before 8.2) problems. Because this problem seems to only happen to people with newish devices and ids.

I know the current problem is an AppleID problem but I don't know if it's a validation script error, a rights issue or something else entirely. We've narrowed it down to the AppleID, but for most of us getting a new id doesn't work. I even tried an id I made last year for something else and it didn't work on my ipad. My husband's works on his 4 gen iPod Touch but not on my iPad.

It just doesn't work......

Hi all, have exactly the same issue as above, cannot sign in to iMessage or Facetime on my iPad mini 3. Only got it on Saturday, created the ID then and not been able to sign in at all; no slider, just the request for ID and password on the login screen then nothing.

Have been on chat with customer care but no luck getting it sorted. Have got a call to AppleCare arranged for tomorrow, so fingers crossed something will come from that, but we'll see.

Haven't tried the new ID yet (just seen that idea today) but will give it a go and come back.

try this richfurn UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE I'm only logged into iMessage and FaceTime I turned of auto set time and date pressed both buttons to restart then when back on I turned the auto set time and date then logged into iMessage then FaceTime 🙂 .

make sure you press and hold both the home button and the power button until the iPad reboots on to the Apple symbol between the two steps above then login ?

A reader, Michael on the MacRumors forums posted this solution to the activation code not showing up:

.

..you need to have your email address turned on for iMessage on your iPhone in order to enable Text Message Forwarding. If you don't, the numeric access code will not appear on your iPad or Mac during the setup process. As soon as you enable your email address for iMessage (you only need to do this on your iPhone) the numeric access codes appear as expected. Once you have text message forwarding setup you can disable your email address again in iMessage as it seems to only be necessary for the numeric access code setup step, not the actual text message forwarding itself.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I have found the same information too and I tried that also. All my email addresses are checked, and mobile phone number also. I tried playing with that, leaving only one email number, or just a phone number, or a phone number an one email address, and also I have tried checking all of them, and still the problem persists no matter what do I check.

I suspect that the problem in this case has the same roots, as the iMessage activation trouble.

AT LAST!!!! Looking through the last few posts I wondered if it was a time validation issue. I looked at the time on the iPad mini 3 and it was a couple of seconds different from what the internet was telling on my PC. Now adjusted the time on the iPad to be the same as the internet checking that the minute changed bang on queue and guess what it then validated.... So back on to iMessage and Facetime - suggest others try to see if it works for them!!

Apr 21, 2015 12:45 PM in response to adamf69

hope this works for 'shana too - there's been a lot of effort gone on here without much from very quiet Apple - unless they sorted out out a server sync problem that was the route cause and ours have started working for that reason - but I suspect if there is a timing issue it could explain the problem with validation - however what about those people crossing timezones (or again the seconds may not adjust only the hours??). But after over two weeks on a new iPad mini 3 at least it is now working !!!

Wow. No, it didn't help me :( I did try several times.

My clock IS off by just a hair ( I downloaded an app called Emerald) but going thru the steps to reset it doesn't seem to get it any more accurate.

I will pass this along to my senior tech person! Thank you!

If it was just the clock tho in my situation, I don't see why my friend's AppleID works on my iPad. Hers works everywhere. Mine works nowhere, my husband's id works on his iPod Touch but not on my iPad. I didn't try his id on my friend's iPad mini 1.

It is baffling. I'd be less confused if no one's ID worked on my iPad Mini 3 or if my husband's id works on my mini 3.

The inconsistency is driving me crazy.
