Look up IP given MAC address

Given a MAC address, how can one locate the Mac on the network and get its IP address?

You query the ARP table.

arp -a


This will list the IP address and MAC address of every device this system knows on the local network.

Note that this doesn't necessarily mean al devices on the network - if your system has never talked to the device then it might not be in the ARP cache. The simplest way to populate the ARP cache is to ping every address in your network, which can usually be done by pinging your broadcast address before running arp -a.
