Very slow Undo/Redo Process !

Hi,

Upgraded to Logic 10.1 yesterday, on a Brand new Mac Pro ( 2015 ), 32GB Memory, 1 TB SSD,

Everything seems to be running smoothly, EXCEPT ...!!! ( Capital Letters )

It's taking 15 seconds MINIMUM to Undo or Redo, Sometimes even a little longer !!

What? Even simple MIDI operations, like delete One Midi note, to undo the process ( Commandl-Z ) it takes 15-16 seconds.

On my Old macPro ( early 2008 ), I also did the update to LPX 10.1 and it is working fine, I am getting immediate Undo/Redo.

I already tried all basic troubleshooting, anyone getting this bug? Any solutions?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 3.5 GHZ 6-Core Intel, 32 GB,1TB SSD

I tried this, but it had no effect.

Which suggestion? Both or just one?

Sorry... Im trying to clarify.....

Also, have you tried deleting Logic's prefs and then restarting your Mac and testing to see if that helps at all?

Delete the user preferences

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  6. If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of these files, you did not follow the steps exactly as described 🙂

Finally, when you look at the undo history... are you seeing a large number of "Move Events"?

If so, this is a known problem in 10.1 relating to clicking on the ruler in the Piano Roll editor to move the playhead.. which causes a Move Event to be added to the undo steps, every time you click... The current workaround it to drag the playhead in the PR rather than click in the ruler.. or... to move the playhead via clicking on the Arrange Window ruler instead...

I don't know if this known issue would then lead to sluggishness but it's possible..

However, please note: I cannot recreate your issue at all.. on any of my various testbed Macs that are running 10.1 and Yosemite 10.10.2... no matter what I trt to do or not do.

Feb 9, 2015 1:27 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

ok, to answer your first question, I reduced the undo history to 25, and started Logic only after rebooting. Getting the same problem.

I just now deleted the logic 10 pref file and the logic 9 pref file. Restarted the machine.

When opening a new session with only 1 audio and 1 MIDI track, things are working rather normal...

I can create a MIDI region, create note events, copy/paste, move, etc. And undo/redo works fine.

If I open a larger session (65 tracks total VIs and Audio), I get the pinwheel and have to wait a few seconds for each undo/redo command.

thanks for your help!

Joe....

Well, as I am sure you have already gathered, after looking through the Etrecheck report.. you have a lot of stuff installed on your Mac that you probably don't need or shouldn't be there..that is 'eating up' your Mac's available resources...

The adware stuff... (Use Adwaremedic to remove it)

The multitude of different audio/midi drivers......Apogee, RME, Motu, Digidesign/Avid, UAD and M-Audio to name but six...

You have SoundFlower running (an audio router...) that can lead to instalbility...

AutoMap is crashing too.. on occasion...

But most telling are the Logic crashes and hangs that are related to basically running out of CPU resources...

What that means is, your Mac and its available resources (RAM/CPU/GPU) is simply not powerful enough to handle everything you are running inside of Logic plus all the stuff running in the background... plus the added strain Yosemite puts on resources too.... so it's simply causing instability and hangs... which is what you are noticing.

I would suggest, using the report you posted up.. is to clear out all the crud left behind... that you no longer use.... or can do without..

Pay particular attention to all the stuff listed and loading up in the System & User Login/Launch Agent/launch daemons/extensions sections.. and remove/delete as much of that as you can... to free up as many resources as you can when you use LPX...

Then run Etrecheck again after the big clean up to ensure you really have removed/uninstalled all that crud properly...

Then restart you mac one last time, and see if any of that improves matters... It may or may not.. but even if it doesn't help directly with the current project, its a good thing to do overall for your system.... for the future.. given you are working with only 8GB of RAM though the lack of RAM situation isn't as bad as the lack of CPU... with what looks like Dual monitors too.. which again increases the load on the CPU... as well as the GPU...

Feb 10, 2015 10:56 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Nigel, thanks so much for all of your advice. I went through and deleted everything I could find that I don't need - all the adware (don't even know what that is), audio drivers, sound flower, etc.

I'm still having the same undo/redo issue which might just be cpu like you said. Oddly though, on previous logic versions running big sessions I've never had this problem.

If I had the downtime available I would do a clean install of only the things I need... but I am saving up for a new iMac this year and will get the fastest CPU I can and upgrade memory too.

thanks again for all your help!

I'm still having the same undo/redo issue which might just be cpu like you said. Oddly though, on previous logic versions running big sessions I've never had this problem.

Well, thats likely because of the extra demands Yosemite and the newer LPX's place on the CPU/GPU.... compared to other LP/OS X combos....

I've been running some side by side tests here and the difference can be very noticable indeed.

You might want to try this fix for some performance issues under Yosemite..... and see if that helps.... It may not.. but it's worth a shot anyhow, until you get your new mac 🙂

Quit all open apps.... Then..

1) Open a terminal

2) Enter and run the following command, entering your password when prompted:

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd4e"

3) Restart the computer

if needed, copy and paste the 'sudo' command into terminal rather than trying to type it out.. to limit mistakes..

Thanks again for all your help!

You are more than welcome...

Feb 12, 2015 6:08 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Nigel,

I'm looking at buying a new iMac this week. I think I just need to go for it 🙂. I have a question... you mentioned GPU... is the graphics card a big deal for working in Logic/Ableton? is it worth it to get an upgraded one?

I'm looking at getting this machine

http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0PG4LL/A/refurbished-27-inch-imac-35ghz-quad- core-Intel-Core-i7

any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Freudz!

This problem was making me crazy... after the project gets bigger i was keeping ending with this problem...

I have the new mac pro, 8 core, dual d700 , 64 bit memory and still have to wait for a ******* undo step??!

Automap is the worst software ever, i aint going to use this **** anymore, it totally kills your workflow and insipiration..

It should make our work go faster, but it just ***** everything up!

My advice to everyone is, if you are using automap, just uninstall that crap and everything will be working great..

just one issue, what are we going to do with older projects with automap plugins in it?

even getting rid of it is creating problems, how wack can it be😠

Very slow Undo/Redo Process !
