Max OS X 10.5.8. Update needed

Dear Apple Support,

I am new here, although I am an Apple customer since many years, first with my beloved MacBooks, then with iPhone and iPod.

I have now a problem and I hope you can help me to solve it.

I have my very old MacBook that I am used to bring it with me when I have to travel for holidays or work and I urgently need to update the software.

Actually I have the original one running (the one I got installed when I buy it many years ago, approx 2007 or 2008)

please, find below the details:

Mac OS X

Version 10.5.8

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR2

I see that everything now is working very badly and slowly, so I really need to update everything.

Please, can you advice the best software to buy to be sure it's compatible, because I don't know what to choose: Lion? Yosemite? Mavericks?

I really don't know which one can be 100% compatible with my Mac.

Please, can you advise? I am not going to buy a new mac, because I already have a brand new at home, this old one is perfect for me to travel so I am not too worried in case of damage or theft.

One last thing: actually I am travelin, so I cannot get the physical DVD for the installation of the new software, then I kindly need to know if I can buy it and download it, otherwise for me it's impossible to get the DVD during my long travel.

Yes, and you'll be able to run PowerPC applications from it.

Another item to consider, especially if you upgrade past Snow Leopard 10.6.8 DVD,

is the later OS X systems will greatly appreciate (will use more) an upgrade in RAM.

The other systems are downloads from the internet, so your local ISP access will be

a concern at that point in time; in the interrim, performance can be enhanced by RAM

upgrade, where more or larger capacity memory chips are installed, to replace old/small.

This is the in-chip variety, and while Snow Leopard 10.6.8 can get by with as little as

2GB (two 1024MB chips, as there are two slots in the RAM bay) the actual total capacity

of this, is a fair bit higher & will greatly enhance serviceability of the Mac & later OS X.

So that is something to consider, and at some point upgrade to a higher RAM capacity;

be sure to choose high-quality Apple tested RAM at that time, since less quality can be

a problem in Mac computers because budget PC RAM usually fails to perform.

Also, if the local Apple vendor or authorized sales/service provider cannot get you an

Apple Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD, some can offer to install it from an archive copy they

have; this is not the best method since you'd still lack the DVD. This disc is a tool that

can give you access to the computer when or if there are issues in hard disk drive.

And once you have the retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD, be sure to keep it; that is an

item that should be included with the computer later if you sell, trade, or give it away.
