Mac Become Slow after upgrading to OS X Yosemite

I'm using MacBook Pro 13" 2011 (intel based). I have recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite. Since then my Mac has become way too slow! What should I do now? Its become impossible this way. Some features not even working properly, specially Safari. I can't sign in to FaceTime. I feel like throwing it away!

Can anybody tell me how do I fix these problems? I want my old fast MacBook back 😟

We need more information. Run EtreCheck to let us see what you are running. Believe it or not, a 2011 MBP can run Yosemite well but two things are certain: you need at least 8GB of RAM and/or an SSD. Even with an SSD 2GB is just too little memory. I'm running 2 4GB computers with SSDs and I'm happy with the performance. Also many people run software that puts a lot of pressure on the computer. If you run Google Chrome I recommend that you quit and restart it frequently - it is a memory hog to start with (to be fair, so is Safari and FireFox) but Chrome doesn't release memory well. Quitting it frequently helps.

oops - solid state drive - darn auto-correct (?)

Its a fast RAM drive basically. With only 4GB I'm not surprised you aren't happy. Check out SSD prices at NewEgg, Amazon, or MacSales.com - prices have really dropped. And check out RAM upgrades too. Or, if you have a backup from before you upgraded we can help you jump backwards.

Hello,

My MacBook Pro is also very slow and I installed CleanMyMac that helped. Before I couldn't do anything on it, even with open Word file it was getting really slow.

Could you please take at my etrecheck?

CleanMyMac really isn't necessary and there's some potential for doing harm according to some people. If you look at the report under System Launch Demons its reporting processes killed due to memory pressure. That's an indication of too little memory. I also see you are using VirtualBox. I cannot imagine trying to use VB with another OS and do anything else. You don't have enough RAM. You can upgrade it to 8GB and/or install an SSD. Either or both would give your computer new life. Your computer is 2 generations newer than my 2009 MBP and upgrading its RAM and replacing the hard drive with an SSD has given it new life.

Jan 27, 2015 10:50 AM in response to rubzstock

I've been struggling along with 4Gb of RAM in my early-2011 MacBook Pro for a while now. I ordered 8Gb (2x4Gb) from Crucial, which arrived this morning. Installed by lunchtime. Wow, what a difference!!!!! I expected it to be a bit faster, but holy cow - it's orders of magnitude faster. I haven't seen a single beachball since powering up after the upgrade. If you're running Yosemite in 4Gb of RAM I can't recommend highly enough that you install 8Gb. An SSD next methinks! 😁

Jan 27, 2015 11:06 AM in response to OGELTHORPE

Yes I know, but I did a bit of research and decided 8Gb will be enough for now - the difference between 8Gb and 16Gb is not as great as the difference between 4Gb and 8Gb. I'm certainly more than happy with it after a few hours use! The money saved will go toward an SSD which is what will really make the difference.

Haven't been on here much lately - just popped on to see if anyone has had any problems with 10.10.2. Nothing reported but I think it's less than an hour since it's been released so I'll check back tomorrow. Don't want to update the OS too soon after installing new memory because if there's a problem I won't be sure if it's faulty memory or a problem with the update, so I'll run things as they are for a day or two to be sure the new memory is okay - looking good so far.

Hey, look at you on Level 7!!!!! 😁

You are correct, but for bragging rights I installed 16 GB in my late 2011 MBP. The truth is that I seldom exceed 4 GB RAM usage let alone 8 GB. 😁 (I am running Lion on this machine)

Get your posterior in gear and get to level 6 which will allow you lounge access. (4705 more points) It is a different and interesting world there and I think you would enjoy it. An international and diverse crowd.

Ciao.

The value of 16GB can make itself known immediately if you are using virtualization to run another OS. My 2009 MBP and 2012 iMac sit side by side on my office desk and I don't really notice that big a difference for things like surfing or word processing. But the 8BG vs 16 GB becomes immediately noticeable when I switch from Win 7 to a Mac app on either machine. The iMac just switches. Still, I agree with the SSD investment.
