Mac Become Slow after upgrading to OS X Yosemite

I'm using MacBook Pro 13" 2011 (intel based). I have recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite. Since then my Mac has become way too slow! What should I do now? Its become impossible this way. Some features not even working properly, specially Safari. I can't sign in to FaceTime. I feel like throwing it away!

Can anybody tell me how do I fix these problems? I want my old fast MacBook back 😟

I've got Yosemite and I've been running Activity Monitor since I installed the new RAM, still not using any virtual memory! Got about 20 tabs open in Safari, Mail, iTunes, Preview and Sublime.

Yessirreee!!! I'll make an effort to hang out around here a bit more from now on. What is this lounge access of which you speak? Am not aware of it!

It is a forum restricted to level 6+ participants. It allows for discussions other than purely technical ones which often can be interesting, educational, and at times contentious! Also if you need help, you have virtually immediate access to some of the best participants on these forums. Plus you can report problems to the moderators that you may feel requires their attention.

Ciao.

Did you upgrade or do a clean install of Yosemite?

I would suggest you do a clean install and upgrade your RAM. Haven done several OS X upgrades, ( macbook late 2011) upgrading to Yosemite would sooner or later compromise my notebook's overall performance. (IMHO) A fresh reinstall was in order, and with an upgrade to 8gb of RAM, my notebook is fast, really fast. I'd invest in RAM before I would invest in a SSD.

Does a clean install really make that much of a difference to speed/performance over an upgrade. I can understand it with Windows with its monolithic registry, but I'm not convinced the same applies to Unix based OS's such as OS X. Have any comparative studies been done comparing a clean install of OS X with a series of upgrades?

Hi. I've been using mac's for 18 years now. starting back in the old operating systems. I don't think clean installs are necessary unless things get really messes up. I was told a long time ago that the operating system was kind of like tires on a car. You don't notice the wear till it becomes obvious. But i don't know if that holds true for the newer operation systems Apple uses now. As long as you do regular maintenance and keep track of hard drive space, repair permissions, your good to go. After using my mac and adding and deleting things, I have found that using a utility that can defrage and optimize the hard drive helps speed things up. Otherwise, having enough ram and hard drive space for what your doing works for me.

You are welcome to test your idea 🙂

Clean installs can help negate the effects of one particular OS X feature that Apple makes very easy to abuse - migrating all data during upgrade or install…

Upgrading OS's doesn't purge old software (unless it is in the xprotect list - then it is prevented from running).

Users may have migrated through 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 (or skipped any step along the way etc).

Each stage brings new incompatible software that gets forgotten about.

When the old Mac eventually gets unstable & unreliable a new one is purchased and it's very tempting to migrate that data onto a new Mac (I want my music etc - which is entirely reasonable). The Apple store will do this for you when you buy a Mac.

It's normal to think Macs should 'just work' including older software, to the point where people are upset when PPC apps do not run on new OS's.

When issues appear novices turn to any site that claims to 'improve you Mac', sometimes it turns out to be a scam that does more harm than good.

At some point they end up here, hopefully before it is too late.

lonkarol's report above is a good case study…

Virtualbox seems unused & forgotten about - the version is from Nov 4th 2011 (when 10.7 was still new) but it still has kernel extensions running altering the OS. Other kernel extensions are installed for wifi/ cellular dongles that are probably out of date ?

CleanMyMac was used to 'fix it' sadly that app is now running even more system jobs.

A clean install removes all of this old junk.

You can migrate the user data since that is 'mostly' harmless –

Old user preferences & application support etc just waste space, but sometimes can cause weird bugs.

Home generally doens't have many apps and system modifications are rarely caused from with the home folder.

Leave the apps behind & get the latest versions, or reinstall them – you will notice a difference if you have migrated through several OS's

Hi,

I am having a similar issue. As soon as I updated to OS X Yosemite my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) started running so slow.

I ran the EtreCheck and this is what came up. Any help would be much appreciated!

If you have been reading the posts on this site ,you should have a good idea on what to do. There is no single magic bullet to fix a slow mac. Upgrading the memory is one thing that would help. Also upgrading any older apps that you have from prior operating systems and third party apps. Uninstalling any that you don't use or can't be upgraded. The best way to uninstall, if possible, is to use an uninstall that comes with the app or go to the website for the app, in support to find out how. There are third party uninstaller's like AppZapper that do this, but they do not always remove everything.Cleaning cache files and repairing permissions with disk utilities can sometimes help also.
