Logic Pro X Playhead Issue

Hi there, I am having a specific issue that has occurred over the last day. I was working in Logic Pro X as usual and for some reason, whilst I am in the piano roll editor I cannot drag (scrub) the ruler to move the playhead without moving the location of the midi region / track above and it is causing an issue. I am not sure if I have accidentally pressed a key command or done something without realising. Interestingly enough, the expected playhead drag behaviour works absolutely fine when I am in an audio file (WAV or MP3) editor and doesn't have the same issue. Here is a video explaining the issue to hopefully make it a bit easier, many thanks! User uploaded file

I'm not sure if "fast click" is an official term or action. usually there is a click (short click) and a click-hold (long click)

Regarding the new Piano Roll behavior:

  • Clicking on the Piano Roll Timeline will move the Playhead to that click position
  • Drag (=click+hold+move the mouse) the Playhead (exactly on the triangle head of the Playhead) will move the Playhead. This is regardless if there is a Region Header or not.
  • Drag on the Region Header will move the Region

The old mouse action where you just dragged anywhere on the Timeline doesn't work if there is a Region Header. In that case, just click first (the Playhead moves to that position) and now drag the Playhead. It is basically one extra click and better position required.

There is on thing to watch out for. Depending on your zoom level, the Playhead might snap to he beginning of a bar. Just zoom out a bit and that should take care of it.

Hope that helps

May I have your attention, Apple Logic Pro X developers/programmers:

Please explain if this is a bug, or if there is a setting I´ve missed somewhere? I have now Googled and checked every possible function in Logic, to no avail. I´ll blow some dust off my Logic 9 box in the meantime.

Note: Logic's Dev are not here.. This is a user community mainly 'staffed' by other users like yourself...

Why doesn't Apple answer the questions that we ask about Logic Pro?

Additional: I cannot reproduce this issue here.. under 10.10.2 and LPX 10.1 I tested on both my testbed Macs and on both of them... Single clicking on the ruler moves the Playhead as normal.

Make sure you are single clicking below the numbers in the ruler....

Failing that.....

Delete both the main Logic prefs and the CS prefs....using these instructions. Please do exactly what they say in the same order.

Delete the user preferences

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  6. If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note. If you cannot find any of these files you didn't follow the instructions exactly as written

I´m having the same issue since upgrading to 10.1. It´s impossible to move the playhead position by single-clicking in the ruler (inside the selected region). If I double click a position in the ruler, the playhead moves, but of course also triggers the "play from playhead position" action so it´s no good. Single clicking in the ruler works *sometimes* though, but it´s jerky and unpredictable. The only halfway decent workaround I found was to use key bindings to jump forward/backward by small increments, but in the end this leaves the piano roll useless to me.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the responses. I totally forgot that I had started this forum on Apple. Atcho, I am glad the mouse click trick worked! And also a fantastic idea about the magicprefs. No idea why Apple decided to change the behaviour of the software instrument play head but not the realtime audio one. If you try the old drag and click in an audio track it works absolutely fine and won't drag the whole region. It takes a while to get used to, but I think I have adapted to it eventually.

I would definitely follow The Art Of Sound's advice in resetting the pref files as i find that updates sometimes cause issues with older preference files.

Thanks again everybody.

Thanks so much for the reply, very helpful and detailed! I do admit it took a while to get used to, now it has become second nature and is virtually a non issue. The new additions in the update are absolutely fantastic so I am very grateful for the new features. Though I do think the new behaviours should be noted and explained for when you first update, as many could class it as a bug.

Thanks for helping! 🙂
