Intermittent - people can't hear me on outgoing calls

This happens about 1 out of 10 outgoing calls on my iPhone 6. I make the call, and the other line will pick up but not hear me at all. I can hear them perfectly. It is as if I'm on "mute" or something.

If I hang up and call back it works fine. I've tried turning off/turning on the phone and doing the hard restart but it still occurs.

The problem isn't just limited to the handset, it also occurs while on speakerphone or using my bluetooth headset. I've even tried toggling the the mute button during the call to see if they can hear me and that didn't work.

Its becoming really frustrating, especially after calling a customer service and waiting 15 minutes, only to have them come on the line and hang up because they can't hear you!

Anyone have the same issue?

Currently running iOS 8.1.2 on the standard size iPhone 6, 64gb.

Did they do anything or offer any insight?

I just picked up an iPhone 7 yesterday and already had it happen multiple times (after often experiencing it with my 6). With my 7 I've only called cell lines and sometimes it happens in the middle of a call. With my 6 it was happening no matter who I was calling. I mostly ran into the problem with those with phone menus though (like doctor's offices).

My 6 died a few months ago and I had switched back to my iPhone5 until I could afford the 7, never experienced the problem while I was on the 5.

I just set Enable LTE to data only given the suggestions here. Hopefully that fixes it.

Just spent almost an entire day on this!!! Went to AT&T they looked at the phone, you must go to an Apple store. Drove over one hour to Lafayette, they looked at it....said you need to go to an "authorized dealer" or something like that. The nearest one was another over an hour away......called, got in and the microphone hole (right next to the earbud hole) was clogged up and he said it was very obvious. WHAT A SHAME!!!!! Wasted my time and why would the AT&T folks not check this in town???? I have not been happy with AT&T and Apple support did not suggest checking that either!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I switched the settings per your recommendation and so far it hasn't occurred, but I haven't had more than 4 outgoing calls yet.

What's the reasoning behind setting it up that way? Do you think my phone is defective? I've asked around and none of my friends with iPhone 6s have had this issue whatsoever with the default settings (LTE for Voice & Data and Noise Cancel set to ON).

No none of that

The VoLTE is relatively new technology and at least AT&T and T-Mobile that I know of - T-Mo from their forums and personal experience and AT&T from here - are having intermittent issues with it.

Most people want the faster LTE for the data - no one really cared much about it for the voice - heck even 2G was fine for that

Hence my advice

If it works out for you so much so the better!

Enjoy your iDevice!

Setting Enable LTE for Data only turns off Voice Over LTE, making voice calls to be handled by 3G.

The difference will show for Verizon and Sprint users, because they use CDMA to handle voice, and the iPhone5/5s/6, does not allow simultaneous LTE and CDMA connection. When a voice call (on Verizon/Sprint) is in progress, the LTE data leg will be suspended, and the data session will be resumed after the voice call is terminated.

This suspending of the LTE leg during a voice conversation is less felt by at&t and TMo users because when their calls fall back to 3G (iphone may display '4G'), they use UMTS for 3G/4G, and UMTS allows for simultaneous voice and data call. However, this simultaneous UMTS data call's speed will vary depending on the cell site you are connected to. It will not be as fast as LTE, but at least mail, map, gps should function. Video streaming definitely will noticibly slow down.

With Enable LTE for Data and Voice turned on, voice calls go through LTE cellsites and then gets handled by different call switching equipment.

Thus for Verizon/Sprint users, LTE for Data and Voice = on allows them to "talk and surf" at places where VoLTE is dependable, which should improve over time as VoLTE becomes more mature.

I have the iPhone 6plus with the latest iOS 8.3 on AT & T.. This has been happening to me intermittently since I purchased the phone the day it came out.. It just happened twice this morning....argh.... so aggravating when people say HELLO....HEllO ??? and they can't hear ME !! I called Apple Care once before and they had me test a few things and they all worked fine so no way to tell what was happening. Same in the store at the genius bar. No one know why this happens?? I shutter to think what would happen if I was really in trouble and needed help, and no one could hear me. APPLE, please find a solution for this problem?????? I NEVER KNOW WHEN THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN. I usually reset my phone and it seems to be ok for the next call. This happens whether i am on speaker or not on speaker or connected to bluetooth in car.

I just turned off my noise cancellation and turned on the hearing aid sound (I don't have a hearing aid) as someone suggested this works..We will see. 😕 APPLE, Please Help!!!!

Same issue is happening to me as well. Seems to be about 1 out of every 10 calls. Occasionally it will go longer between incidents. Doesn't matter who I call either. It happens when I call other Verizon customers, other iPhone 6 users (my wife and parents), non-iphone 6 users, Galaxy phone users, 800 numbers, etc. I was thinking it was related to the Voice of LTE but i've tried enabling and disabling with no noticable change. I'm taking it into the genius bar tonight to see what they say. I'm hoping they just replace the phone under warranty.

Since this had been happening to me since I got the iPhone 6 plus the day it came out, Sept 19, 2014 . I went to the Apple store on May 4, 2015 and they gave me a new iPhone 6plus. Interestingly, on the first replacement phone he pulled out of the package, the touch screen didn't work. So, he opened another package and we we were good to go. They say these are NEW phones, but who knows. They come in a smaller flat package..not like the REAL NEW Phones in the bigger box. Anyway, this iPhone 6Plus works much better, in that the sound seems to be much clearer than my original. AND, the problem of none can hear me has not happened yet on this phone. The rep in the Apple store said they had several people with this problem, but not several hundred. He said they don't know what is causing this problem, but it is obviously a defective internal thing . 🙂

HI. This is happening to me too. Turned lte off and it worked for a while. I had another issue so I replaced my sim, restored my phone with a new OS and did a restore from the cloud. I was good for a while and two days ago it started to happen again. Has anyone found a fix? AT&T doesn't know what causes it. Apple blames AT&T. I read people switched to a new phone and still has the problem. It yang a big deal when I call someone I can easily call right back, but what if it's an emergency call, or someone I have been on hold an hour with that suddenly can't hear Me. Whenever I leave someone a message, I fear it might not have been heard. Any update???

Just caught wind of this problem and thought I'd shed some light.

Basically it has to do with how the VoLTE connection is being setup on the network side; so good news is that it is probably not your phone's fault. You might experience ghost ringing when the phone rings and after you answer there is no audio. This is because the voice resources are not available at the time of call setup.

Or if you call someone with a VoLTE phone on another carrier, it might take a little longer for the voice session to be setup due to inter-network connection differences. Kinda the same problem that plagues inter-carrier/inter-os texts; my texts to and from my fiance are out of order between android/iOS and Verizon/ATT. Just differences in networks and protocols.

Hope this helps some.
