the long command in step 1 did not work - it runs a few minutes and than this

i am sorry and i do appreciate your help but i am not stupid just not familiar with mac software. i was a mainframe machine language coder for 20 years. so give me the big guys and i can work on them. i think i know where i went wrong. i misread you statement and stated at step one. i just read over the notes and missed the first comment. i am sorry. I am learning a lot from this experience. I have never erase a hard drive on a laptop before. I need this to keep running because i can not afford to purchase another one and i love my mac.

So I went back to the beginning and taking the 2nd back up and than will run erase and install OS.
