Unexpected random shutdown

Computer unexpectedly shuts down (immediate, no warning). Not doing anything special. Only symptom of possible problem is when running, Safari access is often inordinately delayed (eventually the site is opened) with fairly regular crashes of elements internal to Safari. Have checked for any known (or unknown) timers, etc. Have gone through the SMS reset drill. Turned off Time Machine. Have 4T WD Cloud on LAN. Attached EtreCheck report.

I always download from Adobe only and have kept the version current. The problem is not how or where one gets Flash: the problem is Flash and the fact that Adobe has had years to make their product fully compatible with the Mac yet still distributes a seriously flawed product. Apple won't even allow it to be run under IOS (which should tell us something about Flash). We're better off without it.

Any website that uses Adobe Flash to display videos and pictures. I have run into instances on many sites, usually news or current interest sites. I can still read and see most illustrations at the site but a video here and there tells me to download Flash if I want to watch the video. Sometimes it is disappointing but more often than not it is no-big-loss.

By the way, the 2009 iMac is running fine without Flash — NO SUDDEN SHUTDOWNS — and my 2013 MacBook Pro running Flash is having no problems even though both computers are using the same release of the OS. Does this suggest there is a hardware or architecture quirk in the iMac making it sensitive to nasty old Flash since the newer laptop seems to have no problem?

May 21, 2015 1:06 PM in response to Old Toad

An update: Discovered Chrome has embedded Flash so shutdowns can still occur if you use Chrome. Also, some automatic video graphics on some websites must use a version of Flash since they also can result in an immediate shutdown without warning.

Not having Flash available is inconvenient: you can't run Speed Test, you can't go to many video sites because they require Flash, you may be following a news article and get stopped by a video requiring Flash. Luckily, this shutdown problem does not effect my newer laptop so I can fire it up if I really want to see a video or do a speed test, etc.

Video is the culprit for these shutdowns but YouTube and Netflix are not a problem since they do not use any form of Adobe Flash (Silverlight is the only MS software on my Mac and I am glad it works so well ... surprisingly).

A 2009 iMac is going to be six years old before long so I might just get a new iMac and hopefully leave the unexpected shutdown problem behind.
