I guess after all these years I have a virus. It is from something called softwareupdatelp.com. Can anyone tell me how to rid my machine of this ? It didn't seemto bring anything up in a search. TY

Can you describe the problem a little more clearly? What exactly are you seeing?
If you're getting an alert that includes that website address and claims you have a virus, that is a scam. See:

Hi,
Recently I allowed pop ups in my preferences to allow one particular ( trusted ) website to send me pop ups. Almost immediately when I clicked on Safari, I got a blank Safari screen and a pop up saying something to the effect of " you need to update your software. Go to softwareupdatelp.com for updates" ( not exact verbiage but similar ) I could do nothing else but "accept" before I moved on. The Safari program was otherwise frozen.
When I clicked on the " accept" it took me to the site.
I followed the instructions from BDAqua above and it seems to have cleared. I have not had the problem since. In a day or two, if this worked, I will donate.
Thanks for your help. I will post any new issues here if I see it again. It was kind of scary because I've had this mac for many years and never had an issue.
Roy
PS…. I was able to use Chrome. This only affected Safari.
This adware is affecting Google Chrome as well.
Your accounting of the "invite" from the malware is what happens. However, it all leads to a page that has an INSTALL button. At that point, close the browser. just do not allow the ware to "install"
