If I have Garage Band 10.0.3, can I discard version 6.0.5?

I have MacBook Air (11 inch mid 2012) running OS X Yosemite. Looking to free up some hard disk space, and the newer version opens with the old version in the trash. Can I go ahead and discard? I have no files I wrote with the older version.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

If the old Garageband has nothing you want, don't look back! You can delete it.

Did you like the old version and have you compared it to GarageBand 10?

This forum is full of desperate questions, on how to get the old GarageBand 6.0.5 back, because the new version has discontinued features.

You can use both versions simultaneously and they do not interfere.

  • Before you trash GarageBand '11, check if you have used and need the features that are no longer supported:
    • Podcasts
    • Magic GarageBand
    • Sound Effect instruments and playing samples tfrom the musical typing keyboard
    • A grid editor for triplets
    • Easy transposition of sound files by turning them into purple regions
    • Vocal effects and easy vocal transformers
  • The new GarageBand 10 brings great new features like the smart instruments and arpeggiators, the midi draw area, amp designer

But before you trash Garageband 6.0.5, make a backup, so you can restore it,if you notice, that you want to use the features, that no longer work in GarageBand 10. Deleting GarageBand 6.0.5 will only save 375,3 MB, but it will be a lot of hazzle to get it back. The most space is used by the loops and instruments, and you will not want to uninstall the loops and instruments, because they can be used by the new GarageBand.

léonie I am intrigued.

Could you please elaborate?

What, (and where) are all the v6.0.5-related files needed to back-up before I upgrade my OS from 10.8.5 to Yosemite (and hence the newest GB 10/11) ?

Is this covered in a FAQ somewhere? or in an article on the internet somewhere?

Sincerely, Craig
