Phone carrier plan vs. iCloud

So I am a college student with my own iPhone 5c (with iOS 7.1.2) and Macbook Pro. I have my own personal Apple ID for my laptop, but to my knowledge my phone is still under my family's Apple ID and iCloud. I haven't signed into their iCloud for four months though. Does switching my phone to my own apple ID interfere with my family's Verizon phone plan??? I'm still on my family's phone plan so if I were to switch Apple ID's would that have any effect on that?? Thanks!!

Hi RidgeMiller,

The Apple ID accounts you use with your device are in no way related to your wireless carrier, so you can use whichever Apple ID you'd like!

But will I lose original contacts already on the phone?

No, you won't lose the contacts. When you sign out of iCloud, it will ask if you if you want to keep the iCloud data on the phone or remove it from the phone. Select the option to Keep on this phone, and it will be merged with your new iCloud account when you sign in with the new account!
