CPU spike, Disk is too slow or System Overload -Logic Pro X Yosemite

Hello all,

I've been digging for a while and have yet to find a solution to my problem.

I recently upgraded my system and I've run into a frustrating snag.

I'm getting a "disk is too slow or system overload" error message, when pretty much nothing is going on in the session.

I first started seeing this in a dense session from my old computer that I brought across to see how my new computer would handle it in comparison. Initially it worked and then I started to get the error message at different points in the song, and not necessarily the same spots, or even CPU intensive sections.

I tried freezing, bypassing, taking plugins off, etc.. that didn't work. I was able to bounce from the session without any problems, so I just did an export all on all 60 tracks just to test them free of plugins in a brand new session. I brought the tracks into a clean session without any plugins on the tracks, buses or the master. Drum roll......still getting the **** error message, there's very little processing happening, and then there's a giant spike one of the 24 cores and the disk i/0 and then the message. So weird!! And incredibly frustrating, as I'm now seeing this pop up in other sessions. I've only recently started working off of my new set-up and this error has me worried that I just dropped a big chunk of cash only to be handcuffed by this glitch. Please help, I've got work on the go, and I'm afraid that this could pop up at any moment.

My new computer is a

Mac Pro (Late 2013)

2.7ghz 12 core Intel Xeon E5

64GB ram

1TB internal flash drive with 600gb free (I have Logic and NI and most of my software installed on this drive)

Thunderbolt 2 Lacie 5big configured to raid6 with about 5 tb free (this is my audio record drive and where my samples/loops and extraneous software lives).

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1 and Logic 10.1.0

I have an apollo twin for my soundcard also thunderbolt

As far as I can tell there shouldn't be any hang up speed wise anywhere in my set-up, but then again this is a new upgrade for me, and I'm not familiar with any of the pitfalls. I have two composer friends who have seen this issue with similar set-ups and none of us have been able to figure it out yet.

Hopefully one of you has the answers, or at least some idea. Please let me know if anyone else out there has come across this issue in the current OS and Logic X, any insight would be helpful.

Thanks!

I did see this issue with LPX10.0.7/10.1 and OS X 10.10.1 but not with LPX 10.1 and 10.10.2

So..

Make sure you have a good stable backup of your system disk ready to roll back to if needed and then...

Now upgrade to OS X10.10.2

Test.....

If that doesn't help then...

Again with a good backup ready if needed...

In 10.10.2 or 10.10.1 for that matter...

Try this....

1) Open a terminal

2) Enter and run the following command, entering your password when prompted:

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0x10"

3) Restart the computer

(Best to copy and paste the command into terminal...)

Test.. and see if that fixes it...

Note: For about 30 minutes after any recent OS X upgrade.. overall Mac performance will be affected.... while OS X reconfigures itself...

Hey,

Just so you know that your not going mad, I am experiencing pretty much exactly the same issues. Im running a new mac pro, external ssd, got 32 gig of ram in it, I'm using nowhere near the capacity and I get these errors all day long. I am also getting quite a lot of hanging and sometimes logic is quitting out on me.

I have tried a lot of things to try and remedy this, I'm guessing its a logic bug.

I just refuse to accept that it does this stuff with the very latest and best machine you can lay your hands on....its just crazy.

Did you follow what I said in my previous post in this thread? (Upgrading to 10.10.2 and LPX 10.1... or if you still get issues..using the terminal 'fix' I posted up)

I'm currently testing a Mac Pro, pretty much the same spec as yours without any such issues in regards to performance... A couple of crashes here and there, yes.. but CPU overloads etc.. as there were with OS X 10.10.1 and LPX 10.0.7 or 10.1, on the same Mac pro... No..... That seems to have been fixed in the latest OS X update...

Note: This issue with CPU performance is not just affecting LPX. It affects other apps too.. indicating this particular issue is not specfic to LPX itself.. but to OS X in general. Most people who had this issue found it was fixed after upgrading to 10.10.2 or by using the fix I provided.

If neither worked for you...

Then...

Please download Etrecheck from here...

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

..and then launch Logic Pro

Now run Etrecheck and post up the full report here....

Thanks...

Nigel

That sounds hopeful, are you at the performance and stability level of your SL/Logic9.1.5 combo?

Oh no... but I wasn't expecting to be..

I am back to the (and in my opinion.. maybe even slightly better) performance levels of Mavericks 10.9.4 and LPX 10.0.2 however.... and stability is a lot better than it was with prior versions of Yosemite and LPX, generally speaking.... though there are some crash bugs in 10.1 that need fixing (Bass/Guitar Amp Designer for example) No showstoppers for me at least....

I don't think we will ever get back to the performance levels and stability of 9.1.5 and 10.6.8.. I just don't see it happening... but I have spent the last few days only using the 10.1 and 10.10.2 combo and it's workable...... and there are some actual benefits now to using LPX over LP9 imho.... (VCA style faders are just one bonus..)

Also, I have been offered a blazingly powerful 2014 Mac Pro... which i am currently testing.... at a really stupid low price and on that I have to run Yosemite.... so that might force me over to the Dark Side ™...

I'll still keep my main SL/LP9 setup as my primary work Mac for the time being but I can see me switching over to the Mac Pro and LPX in the future if the performance and stability doesn't take a nose dive again... as the speed of my external Velociraptors 10k Duos and the Samsung SSD I just picked up..over Tbolt 2 is ... ridiculously fast! The difference when loading/streaming large sample libraries/audio files is like night and day compared to anything I could achieve with my main 2011 iMac....

Umm.. I ending up typing way more than i intended!

I'll shut up now 🙂

Same here Yosemite 10.10.2, LPX 10.2.0, MBP Retina Mid 2014, 2.5GHz, i7, 16GB RAM, 512SSD

CPU Spikes + Drive is too slow message

Reason 8.1 plays out of sync over rewire, or simply won't load until hitting play button in LPX

Latest issue with U-he software (thanks U-he stuff for fixing this up quikly)

SEEMS LIKE STABILITY IS NOT A SYNONYM TO APPLE'S PRODUCTS ANY LONGER (IF EVER)

i feel like i'm using ipad 2 with ios 8, it's just sluggish, while i know it can run smoothly. People buy expensive high end Apple computers to WORK, while Apple seems to invent new issues over and over again to keep us on a route of endless hardware updates.

FIX THIS APPLE, YOUR LATEST RELEASES SUCK BIG TIME.

CPU Spikes + Drive is too slow message

Did you run the terminal 'fix' I posted earlier in this thread?

Reason 8.1 plays out of sync over rewire

According to a client of mine... who contacted Props about this issue... This is a known Rewire issue that affects only a small number of people.. and an update is needed from Props to resolve the problem.

Latest issue with U-he software (thanks U-he stuff for fixing this up quikly)

Note: As Urs admitted... it was a u-he issue because they didn't update all their plugins earlier.. to remove all reliance on the old legacy AU SDKs even though Apple announced the drop in support for these old SDKs at least a year ago.... if not longer..

FIX THIS APPLE

Why doesn't Apple answer the questions that we ask about Logic Pro?

Did you run the terminal 'fix' I posted earlier in this thread?

I did ran the terminal command line, didn't have a chance to check if it fixed anything, I will surely post if it was or wasn't of any help. What i did for now was deleting logic preferences. I've been on Logic ever since 2010, the issue happens from time to time with Logic updates Apple eventually releases. I may sound rude (while i'm certainly not, because just like any other Apple user i'm kind of an apple fan), but is it so difficult to test updates before releasing them? Even customers with 12 cores on board have issues, this is ridiculous.

Yesterday it was working fine with Logic Pro X 10.0, today it lags with Logic Pro X 10.1 i can admit that's something on propellerhead's end and i informed them about it. As for the "Rewire issue that affects only a small number of people", I run a top end MBP, i paid for the product not to be affected by even a small number of issues at all.

FIX THIS APPLE

Yes, and i intend on it. We can all pretend OSX been the most perfect operation system ever released, or LPX been the best DAW, or iphone been the best phone yet, but you can't deny the fact a product is perfect when it runs perfectly well.

I certainly do not think this is true... Why do you think my main working rig is still LP9.1.5 and OS X 10.6.8 🙂

Then complain to Props... or Apple... but we are just Users here like yourself. Thats why I posted up that user Tip.. so you and other users would understand that basically Apple are not here.. and nor are the Logic Dev team... as its a User supported Community

but is it so difficult to test updates before releasing them?

As several of us have comments here.. We are all Logic's (or OS X or whatever other app's...) Beta test team now... Like it or not, but that is the sad truth these days.

Hi Nigel,

I tried all the things you said, still keep getting problems where i really shouldn't be. I have included the etre check of my system, maybe you can spot something thats wrong here! thanks man!
