iPod touch 3G says "No Wi-Fi" in grey next to Wi-Fi (also in grey)

Hi forums, my iPod touch 3G is an iPod touch 3G I bought at a thrift store, so the warranty is gone. I went to this repair place at the local shopping mall and the guy said it could have been a software error. So I figured it was and left the store.

I've have tried numerous methods on downgrading it, but they haven't worked. And no neither did the freezer nor the heater.

What do I do?

See:

iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim

One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.

Also heating sometimes works. See:

Why can't I select my wifi settings?

A trick that works frequently with iPhones:

Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON

Power down and wait 5-10 minutes

Power up

Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF

If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
