Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I am considering purchasing Aperture.

I am considering purchasing Aperture.

What is the deal with the possibility of it being discontinued? Is that possibility real? (February 2015)

If so what would be an alternative photo application for my iMAC?

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

I often applied the retouch-tools of aperture - especially for scans. Switching to lightroom obviously means, that these pictures first must be duplicated as final copies. All retouch work can no longer be kept as layers.

Even worser, I fear, that the structure of the media database can not be migrated completely to lightroom.

Thank you very much, Apple, for a decision, made under barely economic priority and without any consideration of the difficulties users might have!

Thank you! Now users begin messing around with a photos app, that will need a decade to grow to a state of usability. *** is the reason, that Apple fails to develop and maintain software tools like aperture in the long term?

You're going to have to buy space in 'the cloud' from Apple if you want to use photo's to it's full extent anyway... (unless you don't use more than the free say 5gb of space )

The subscription to adobe to 'rent' LR & PS is no more than the total cost of the software anyway. I don't upload to 'clouds' at all.. I only trust my hard earned images on my own external HD's... that way if anyone changes the rules at a given point (Apple) I still have my original masters.. As far as re editing my past images in LR is concerned it's been a joy to do so.. I have sold more images after re editing the originals with LR anyway...and the fresh outlook to editing with LR is i stimulating...and productively... easier.. Why wait (if you are selling images) for Photos to evolve while you can earn straight away with LR..?

Regards...

Will I therefore be ok if I download Photos - I don't want to start using iCloud photos library as I will be spending 6/7 months travelling in the next year or so and don't want to be wifi hungry.....

I've been traveling and missed your question sorry.

You can simply ignore Photos and continue to use Aperture or iPhoto with My Photo Stream, and use Photos on a small test library, but not enable iCloud Photo Library for this test library. I would not go on an extended travel with a Mac that is running Beta versions.

I am considering purchasing Aperture.
