5.1 Setup in DVD Player app

Is there a way to set up the DVD Player App to play the surround mix on a DVD? Or is it just the stereo version that is available? I know that there is a 5.1 mix available on the disc. There is no audio setup menu item on the disc. I have played it on another app and can confirm that there is a surround mix on the DVD. But I do not see any setup instructions in the help section. I have a 5.1 audio interface and it plays in another app with 5.1. But the picture is stuttering because it's a Blu-Ray app. I can hear it in 5.1 on the Blu-Ray app but it's in stereo on the DVD Player app. Features/Audio does not offer 5.1 as an option on the DVD Player app.

I also attempted to set it up according to the instructions on this page:

Under preferences/disc setup it says System Sound Output. The only other option is Digital Input into my TV monitor. Still playing in stereo.

On a separate note, I am looking for a way to get the digital output of my TV to my interface via the digital outputs, but I will need a converter. I am using a Apogee Symphony I/O as an interface.

Are you using an Optical/TOSlink connection to the Apogee Symphony I/O, or only with Thunderbolt.

According to Apple article (support.apple.com/en-us/HT202029), it does not specify Thunderbolt as an output option.

With my Optical/TOSlink connection, I was able to make the following selection in the DVD preference.

You will need to stop/eject the DVD disc, if it is greyed out.

Also... this may sound a bit silly.
The OS X DVD Player remembers the settings from a disc you played before.
So, could the DVD Player be playing Stereo 2.0 stereo audio track, and not the 5.1 Audio track like the Blu-Ray software.

Try changing it from DVD sound/audio menu, or try a different DVD disc.

In regards to your TV audio out, you have provided very little information, but here are some steps you can try.Refer to the TV user guide for Digital output connection, it can be optical or coax connection.
A note the user guide of your TV, may have a layout to a sister model. Best is to check on the real thing. (Personal experience)
