can anybody help.
since I have updated my iPhone 5s and iPad mini to iOS 8.1.3 I have lost a lot of contacts. I have tried switching off iCloud contacts and switching back on but that didn't help, they have just vanished.
Does anybody have any ideas?

I'm guessing that you are using iCloud to sync contacts? If so, when you log into iCloud on the computer, what do you see? Are the contacts there, or are they missing from iCloud on the computer as well?
I Have checked on iCloud and there are even more missing on there than on the iPhone and iPad.
There is no reason contacts should disappear from the device. The iOS would not have anyway to do that. Are all 3 devices in sync with each other. If not, that is something that needs to be looked at. You can turn off contacts in iCloud and when prompted, select to save them and merge with the phone or iPad when you turn them back on again.
I can't help, but I CAN tell you the same thing happened to me. I seem to have lost any contacts updated since the beginning of 2015. Any help is appreciated.
Went through itunes and did a restore back to a previous date where the contacts were still there. Took HOURS to do it, but I did manage to get my contacts back. A word of warning, it may ask you for a password that you may have that is different from your Apple ID, this took me some time to figure out just by itself.
..... Now, If I can just figure out how to get my sounds to work again! 8.3 update is painful!
