Downloads stop when i close my screen

I am having issues with downloading large file because sometimes i need to close my screen. When I do this though my download stops. Is there anyway i can let the download continue while my screen is shut. I have password required to return from sleep could this be part of it??

Macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8), Intel dual core

It's because your computer is going to sleep. There is an option to have your computer continue to run with the lid closed (the display powers off) which might interest you.

Why do you need to close your screen during a long download? To use the option referred to above, you will need an external keyboard and an external monitor, which may defeat the purpose of closing your screen... Otherwise, there is no way to continue active processes when you close the lid. Do you just need to shut off the display? Activate a hot corner on in your screen saver prefs...
