iMac won't boot at first attempt

Hi

Recently I've been experiencing that my intel iMac won't boot at first attempt and I have to powerdown manually and then try again. Second time it boots just fine. It's usually in the morning (been shut off for the night), but not always. I've tried disc utility from the install dvd, have repaired permissions and reset the nvram and everything seems just fine. The thing is, this has happened after the 10.4.8 update as far as I can remember. Does anyone else see this or is it a coincidence and some other problem?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Best regards

Rico

Neil,

Apparently Apple is recalling certain 20" iMacs for a bum power supply. This might be the answer to your problem.
I think I found the solution to mine. I have two firewire devices daisy chained to my iMac; an external hard drive, and a DVD drive. I kept the DVD drive turned off because of its annoying fan noise. After disconnecting both devices, the computer comes up without a problem. I'll reconnect one at a time to make sure, but I'm guessing the powered off device is the culprit. Here's the link to Apple's recall.

Hi Rico,

I have exact the same problem as you describe. I also tried everything (reset, clean install, ..) without result. There is no way that I can live with the fact that I need to boot my mac (when he's cold) 2x to get it going. I plan to send it back for repaire (I still have warranty until the end of this year).

Do you already have more news from the shop?

Hello all

I got my iMac back a couple of days ago and here's basically what the repair guys said: we don't know what is causing this, we've seen the problem and don't know the cure. What they've done is replace the entire motherboard and the machine works flawlessly again. It took 3 weeks. If the iMac does anymore funny stuff I'm considering getting rid off it - this has been way too "exiting" :/

I hope all of you don't have to go through this (just saw a firmware update, and I hope that cures some issues)

Best regards

Rico
