2014 Macbook Pro Retina turns off randomly

Hey all, I purchased my Macbook about 4 months ago and only last month it has started having these weird phases where it turns off at random times..

Sometimes it will stay on for hours and then sometimes it won't even make it past the boot screen.. I have made a video of it doing it.

Any info would be great!

I don't think it's your battery. I think there is a CPU low voltage condition that might be resulting in the processor and the machine shutting down. This app worked for me to correct the problem: NoCrashMBP from RealMacMods.com

https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/

It was $10 at the time I purchased it. No shutdowns since I loaded the app. I have made it a login item so that it runs every time I start up the macbook.

Hi Jarrad Beard,

It sounds like your computer is turning off with no rhyme or reason behind it. I would start with using this article to reset your SMC since that is one of the symptoms that the article mentions:

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

If the issue persists, then I would use the troubleshooting information in this article next for additional assistance.

OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care,

Sterling

Didn't help, no matter what I try nothing seems to solve it. I've tried resetting the smc, I do what it says but there's no way of actually knowing if it did anything.. I've even tried reinstalling the Mac os but the cant keep it on long enough for the software to download.. So now it's basicly a brick. An expensive brick.

I Find it pretty pathetic by Apple and their worldwide warranty.. I work on big white and the closest Apple store is in Vancouver, I won't get a chance to go there until the end of April at the earliest, I tried going to an 'authorised Apple dealer' in kelowna and they offered to repair it.. It's 4 months old. I don't want it repaired I want it swapped with a new one. I didn't spend close to $2000 on something that my phone is more useful than.

I Can't even keep it on long enough for me to back it up.. So all the photos I have taken on my trip will be lost. This was my first change from pc to Mac and so far it's been the worst decision ever.. Lost me as a customer and I won't be recommending Apple to anyone.

Call the apple store in Vancouver and explain the problem. Including the distance problem and ask for some options. They will probably want to fix it also, but you could tell them it's a problem being without it that long. In the mean time try booting to safe mode Shift key at startup. If it boots up. it will try to repair the boot volume. To get out of safe boot, just press the power button until it turns off. You can use the restore mode ,only this time use utilities to go to disk utilities and run a repair of the drive and permissions. If you can you could try to boot to single users. Command S at startup. http://www.everythingmacintosh.com/tech-notes/repair-your-hard-disk-in-single-us er-mode/ The only thing I will add is if you get the system was modified. Run it again. Also pram reset Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes. When you do aSMC reset you do not hear any sounds or booting until you press the power button again.

Some things I need to know. When you first got this MBP and set it up, did it run good? Did you install or migrate anything from another computer or anything? After you first got it and set it up as to user. What modifications,if any did you make to it? Programs and third party apps that you may have installed. When you reinstall the operating system from the recovery mode. That is all that it does. Any files, folders or apps that you have added are not touched. On the chance that this is not hardware related,I'm trying to determine if the is a software conflict based on something added to the stock operating system.

WWhen I purchased it, it ran fine.. I set it up as a new user, logged into my iTunes account and all that, it prompted me to update to yosemite so I did.. It worked fine for about 2 months and then it started turning off randomly, only like once a day. Then it started getting progressively worse.. Sometimes I can even keep it on long enough for it to stop making the startup chime noise. But it will go through a stage that it will stay on for hours but then go back to shutting down all the time..

i Had the usual apps eg. Photoshop, premier, spotify. The only app I every got to alter the computer was called nosleep, I got it from the App Store and it stops the computer going into sleep so I can download things without them stopping.

I Formatted to drive to see if it was software or hardware so there's nothing on it, now when I restart the computer I have to hold command + R and it goes into Internet recovery mode for about 10 minutes, once past that I have to download Mavericks (only option) and the computer never makes it through that, it turns off and I have to do it all over again.

Very annoying.

If you upgraded to yosemite, then when you go to recovery and reinstall, it should be yosemite. Not maverick. To go back to maverick you would have to completely wipe your drive by erasing it. If when you open to recovery, you are seeing maverick. Installing it over the top of yosemite will mess things up not help.If you were to wipe your drive by erasing it, you would have to use internet recovery to reinstall Then when you did command+r, you would go to a globe and enter in your wifi setting and it would take you to where you had to use your apple id. This is used if you completely lose your operating system and have no other means to reinstall.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4718

I went camping last weekend. Was surfing internet before going to bed. Closed the screen so it would go to sleep. Then I went to sleep. When I woke up condensation was all over tent including my phone and MacBook Pro. Wouldn't start. Put in rice and dessicants in bag for a day. Wouldn't start still. Took out old battery and put in new one. Removed SSD and put it back in. Resetted NVRAM. Started 1 out of every 10 tries. But even when it did it would shut down all of a sudden within like 15 seconds. Looked for any spill stains on motherboard as I read an article to use 90+% isopropyl to clean electronics and then let dry. Didn't see any really. Looked at the ports...all of them had not only dust but dust that looked like it got wet and oils in the dust turn it to caked crud. Disconnected all power. Used tiny pick tools with small paper towel soaked in isopropyl and carefully and completely cleared any cakey dust out of all ports. Dried thoroughly. Put everything back together and voila...working a-okay! No $1000+ camping trip! This was my own experience and I am not recommending you do anything.
