Option 5 produces "§" instead of infinity symbol. Why?

Option 5 produces "§" instead of infinity symbol. Why?

I have two Macs, both Macbook Pro, mid-2009 with latest OS 10.10.2

On one MBP, but not the other, typing <Option + 5> produces the symbol " § " instead of the infinity symbol.

The last time I typed <Option + 5> to get the infinity symbol it worked, but that was months ago.

I have no idea what I've done to create this issue. I'd really like to get my infinity symbol back!

Any suggestions?

Select the correct keyboard layout from the Input menu. If needed, open the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, click on the Input Sources tab, and show it.

Turns out I had "U.S. Extended" selected; "U.S." is the one that works. Thank you Niel

∞∞∞∞∞∞ "Australian" also has the ∞ symbol on Option/5 ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞
