Slow running MacBook Pro

I've got a mid 2012 MacBook Pro that has been bogging down significantly the past few months. I first noticed the problem when I had Microsoft Word and my internet browser (usually Chrome) open at the same time. The problem is its worst when I have a webpage pulled up that is constantly loading those ad videos on the side of the page. For example, I was referencing an article on HuffingtonPost.com as I typed a report in Word and going between the two just got slower and slower until I had to restart my computer. Closing the webpage and even the applications did not seem to help; things still ran slow until the restart.

I've read several threads already about this problem and a lot folks seem to be using EtreCheck to reveal some problem apps. Should I download it, run it, and post the info here?

Thanks in advance! Any help is most appreciated.

Here are the computer specs:

OSX 10.10

13" MacBook Pro Mid 2012

2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

(no Windows)

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

In the other thread: I am more focused on getting rid of crap or incompatible software (and solving the problem often as a byproduct) and promote using etrecheck because it is easily readable for everybody.

Linc focusses on solving the problem only, by letting you make a list that for a big part looks like tracking the same info as etrecheck adding some very specific items, and it is very cryptically. Most of the time he finds the error.

Personally I think that a poster with a problem should understand what is happening during the discussion.

So of course I propose the run an etrecheck list.

(and when Linc comes in here, he will advise against it). Play us out.

An SSD and more Ram certainly brings much more speed, but even with your 4GB and HDD Yosemite your mac may do really better, without

-- Chrome, use Safari or Firefox or Opera instead.

-- Akamai, cripples your mac.

-- Native Instruments USB Audio

note: I am not sure about LogiPrefManager and PrintOptionPane.

-- the Calac drivers.

Also do

* SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove all items with the minus sign underneath. Then restart.

* MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins delete both AdobePDFViewer plugins: counterproductive in Yosemite.

I had to stop using chrome because on sites like you say, Huffington post, and even the Facebook newsfeed, any website with a lot of video or plug in content caused my browser to crash. Apparently it's a common issue. Definitely use Safari like Lex suggests, it's worked for me, because I like you, switch from my browser to apps and it was a mess before.

Thanks for your input everyone! Sorry for my slow follow-up, I fell off the map this past weekend.

Lex, I deleted Akamai and both AdobePDFViewer plugins; removed all Loginitems; LogiPrefManager; and am now using Safari. The Native Instruments files (including Caiaq drivers) are part of guitar software I use, so haven't deleted them. Hopefully this will be enough to get things back to normal. Thanks again for you time and assistance.
