Virus Alert Warning

Since the new year I have been getting an increasing number of pop-ups on my MacBook Pro which progressed to MacKeeper pop-ups every few minutes. Today, I have received a Virus Alert Warning from what seems to be a non-Apple source. The link to the warning read http://max-sim.in. The link included a number to call for assistance with the problem. When I called the number, I lost the call and then proceeded to receive calls back from 3 different numbers within a couple minutes (I did not answer these). What steps should I take to figure out what the problem is?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

I've owned Macs (apple products) since 2004. Linc Davis posts have helped me understand what's going on with my Macs and helped me numerous times. For what it's worth...

Does that then excuse or validate his comment? I would suggest that you judge the post on the basis as written, not on past experiences which may be totally irrelevant to the matter at hand.

Mackeeper still at their scamming. Got a TAB opening with warning on Virus allegedly from APPLE saying I got a virus. Click to repair which takes you to the scam by Mackeeper.

Waring to you... stay away from this scammer!

Many of these "virus alert popup you must call this 1-800 and pay $200 for them to fix it" messages are the result of someone adding the following to their web page:
