Apple router on comcast gateway

i just got a new comcast gateway with built in wifi, to replace my comcast modem and apple extreme . The gateway is terrible - it is slower, does not cover our house anylonger - heck I had to move it to the basement in the center of the house so our living room was covered. So much for issues, I want to buy a new apple router and replace the gateway wifi - will comcast let me turn off the wifi on their new gateway? I have Comcast TV and phone so I need it? Anyone else replace the built in wifi from Comcast with an Apple router? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Seems like that would be a question best answered by Comcast support. Did you ask them?

Suggest that you first find out what Comcast will and will not let you do, and then post back with that information to see if there might be way to do what you want using an Apple product.

Have u every tried to call or contact Comcast?

Comcast is not noted for their stellar customer support. Nor are they overly eager to assist you in either changing or quitting service with them.

Comcast does offer a web-site that lists compatible networking hardware which they support. You may want to go over this to see what options you have in replacing the current gateway device that they are providing you. I personally do not have Internet service with Comcast, but have helped dozens of user that do with similar questions as yours.

I use Comcast and when I updated my older modem to the new one, I told them not to activate the wi-fi portion of it to start with. However, I notice that it still broadcasts their SSID. I use a Linksys router for my own wi-fi, but the last time I called Comcast, they told me wi-fi was not active on my account and they couldn't understand why it was still broadcasting the SSID. When I asked the customer service rep to connect me to support so I could ask them, I was disconnected. Coincidence, maybe. But I only have Comcast internet. I use other TV and phone services. It is possible to do, I'm just not sure if it is needed for their other services.

Could you at least provide the make and model number of your gateway?

There are any number of choices that Comcast provides and the features and function differ from model to model. Without a bit more information, all that we can do is make a vague guess on your questions. Don't think that you want that.

There are a number of online help forums and user to user forums that Comcast sponsors.

The Wireless Gateway 1 (Model Numbers TG862G) provides the functionality of a Wi-Fi router, DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, and voice modem in a single device. If you have both XFINITY Voice and XFINITY Internet services, the Wireless Gateway 1 is an all-in-one way to stay connected and manage a home network.

So, I doubt this will help you Bob, but thanks for trying.

Comcast is sending these to all of its customers these days. I need it for the phone service, and Internet , but the internal wifi router is not very good. At least not so far for me. I would really like to buy a new airport extreme - we are an all Apple house with a number of iPhones, iPads, and Macs no PCs.

Started having issues with hangs, low reception, and strange problems when I switch out my older comcast modem and older AirPort Extreme to this Gateway 1.

It is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the TG862G if you want to do that, then add the AirPort Extreme to provide a wireless signal.

What I cannot tell you is if you do this, whether it will affect the existing phone or TV or other services you might have.

So, if Comcast cannot or will not help you, then we'll have to hope that another user who has a TG862G has done what you ask about.

It's possible that another user who has done this might see your post and know the answer. Hopefully, that will be the case and you will soon have a response.

Another option that you have.....if you cannot find an answer about whether turning off the wireless on the TG862G will affect the phone or TV service......is leave the TG862G wireless on, and simply set up the AirPort Extreme to provide a second wireless network and use that network for your iPhones, iPads, Macs, etc.

If you decide to try this, keep the AirPort Extreme at least 6-8 feet, or a few meters, away from the TG862G. If you have a long enough Ethernet cable to connect from the 862G to the AirPort Extreme, you can locate the AirPort virtually anywhere that you want.

Bob, how do you turn off the wifi router in the gateway so that I can control wifi from a new AirPort Extreme and airport utility ? I went into the web access to the gateway with 10.0.0.1 and found no way to turn off the wifi router. The Comcast forum has a few close comment and they say to ask comcast to put the gateway in a Bridge Mode, whatever that is? I was going to try that Wed. and sit on the phone for a few hours trying to get thru.

Funny you should ask, I do have the same Comcast router, and an AE, but in my case the router is in the basement and the AE is far from it, so I never bothered turnig the wifi off, in case I need wifi in the basement. So I don't know that answer, I do know that the Comcast box has such a short range that it does not affect anything else in my situation.

i Was serious about how long it takes to get in contact with Comcast though.

So I really don't care if I turn off the gateway wifi as long as I can use the AirPort Extreme wifi in the house. How far from the gateway does the extreme have to be? Will I see the Ssid from the AExtreme on my devices and will there be any interference with the gateway wifi? I could get a long Ethernet cable and try this, is there any special settings I would have to use in the airport utility? Thanks
