imac slow startup after updating to yosemite

After upgrading my iMac with yosemite, the startup takes time. The wallpaper appears first and then desktop icons start appearing one by one. It behaves similarly to a webpage that downloads slowly due to slow internet connection.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:

1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After ** loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the ** status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If ** reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit ** and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

I can't seem to boot into safe mode. Ive unplugged the external drives etc and done a clean install of yosemite and if anything its made it slower. The problem is exactly the same as the original poster. While its starting up, just before the login screen appears the screen shows a kind of vertical blind blocking before and the login screen appears very slowly. There is a ton of button lag when I enter my password. 20 seconds perhaps. Then the desktop loads out of ratio (over/underscans) I know how to adjust it but it now does it everytime I boot up. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any pointers

Could be your iDrive is trying to backup all the time to the cloud and slowing things down. I'd remove all items from the System/Users & Groups/Login Items as well as uninstalling the avatron, prosoftnet, logmein, spotify and any google software. Then reboot and see if there's any improvement. If so you can start reinstalling items one at a time with the most recent updates and test for while before moving on to the next.

Otherwise make an appointment at the nearest Genius bar for a diagnostic test. Be sure to have a backup of the hard drive before in case Apple decides it needs to wipe the drive and reinstall the system.

That kind of slowness could even mean a failing hard drive.

Feb 19, 2015 12:14 PM in response to Old Toad

Really appreciate your support with this. How do i uninstall the avatron, pro soft net etc. Is it just a case of locating the apps and deleting them or is more involved. I recently moved from crashplan and that wasn't easy to remove. Resetting the smc and pram seemed to speed it up a bit. I tried to repair permissions yesterday and didn't get anywhere. After the install today via recovery (I think) the repair permissions seemed to work better this time round. It's working now albeit very slowly. It's just sluggish now. Any recommendations from here? to add insult to injury my broadband is playing up tonight so will tackle it again tomorrow. Thanks once again for your help

Feb 20, 2015 3:50 AM in response to Old Toad

Im getting somewhere now. I removed everything from my login items including idrive. I also removed spotify and google from launch agents. Spotify was often showing red in activity monitor although I rarely use it. I don't get the weird blocky lattice on start up any more so I'm almost there. Its still a bit slow but its now usable. My only stumbling block seems to be logmein. I can find the internet plugins by searching for it. However, when I go to the relevant folder in the library the files don't appear. From what I can find online logmein is causing a lot of problems with files left over from the app deletion. Im I safe to delete this plugins via the spotlight search? I am posting everything I've done on here in the hope it might assist someone somewhere. I had no idea these things were still lurking on the mac when the app has been deleted. Its like having a PC again😢. Thanks again

Feb 20, 2015 8:39 AM in response to Old Toad

Thanks I will give that a go. Ive also found that a mail is stuck in my outbox in mail. I rarely use mail as I personally think its dreadful but it hogs 10 gig plus of memory and I can't get to the message fast enough to delete it. I can't even post a new thread about it??? I just get the message that I'm not allowed to post it? very weird. Ive had macs for years and never really had many problems but over the past few months its becoming more and more troublesome. Ive got a new macbook and I'm not installing anything on it, or even using mail but it does at least work. Thanks once again
