Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Will adding more memory speed up my computer?

I have a late 2009 27" iMac 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB Graphics card. My system has been running crazy slow lately and I've tried a number of fixes to no avail. Short of buying a newer, faster, and more current computer I was wondering if adding more RAM would help?

Thoughts? Thanks!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

So have you tried disabling or removing Trusteer Rapport or Akamai yet?

Akamai is basically using your internet connection as a peer to peer cache, to speed up their downloads. It should allow you to get faster downloads from them, however your appalling iTunes download speed suggest that it isn't really helping at all (I think Apple host lots of content on Akamai).

Trusteer Rapport may be required by your banking site, but it seems to get bad reviews, other users have complained about it on here.

I'm surprised Linc hasn't mentioned them, shouldn't they be removed as a test Linc?

How did you disable them? I don't know how well they turn themselves off, (which is why I also keep suggesting removing them as a test).

You can also boot into safe mode to disable the extensions to see if the OS downloads any better.

Hold shift & boot to disable extensions, login & see if the issue is any better, some things will not work in safe mode - the OS is running with many Apple extension turned off in addition to the third party ones. Test as much as possible & let us know how it worked.

I would also consider changing any DNS servers you may have set in System Preferences > Network. You could try removing them so your ISP's default ones are used, or try googles 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4. Or maybe opendns.com.

You haven't removed "DVD Fab," at least not completely, and you still have two connections to the same network. However, I doubt that either of those steps will solve the problem. There are error messages in the log indicating a hardware fault. They have increased since yesterday.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375081?hl=en

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

Trusteer Rapport is another troublesome application on OS X.

Completely uninstall this, as well.

http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

Make sure you have updated ALL your installed software and ALL connected device software and drivers.

Update all of your Web Browser Internet plugins and extensions.

I have the same iMac as you running OS X 10.9 Mavericks with no real issues or slowdowns.

If you want to install more RAM into your iMac, your year and model iMac can take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.

Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources such as Crucial memory or OWC (http://www.macsales.com).

Good Luck!

Feb 23, 2015 5:38 PM in response to Linc Davis

I just ran a new round of iTunes updates and they're running at normal speed now--I haven't checked our problem with Photoshop yet. I went ahead and ordered some extra RAM--it's only about $35 for 4 GB on Amazon so we'll see if that does anything. If not I'll have to have it serviced. Thanks so much for your time and help.

Feb 23, 2015 6:38 PM in response to bzq

If Linc D. says your Mac has a hardware fault, then you can bet he knows what he is talking about.

Call your nearest Apple Store and make an appointment at the Genius Bar for a free diagnostic and quote for any repair that your iMac may need.

Nothing you do, at this point, will, "magically", repair the hardware fault with your iMac.

Bring it into an Apple Store ASAP.

Good Luck!

Will adding more memory speed up my computer?
