Unable to free space on hard drive

I have been unable to free up space on my startup disk. I deleted several GB of movies and they did not go to the trash bin so I assumed they were deleted. However, when I monitored the storage on the System Information panel, before and after deleting this movies I observed negligible change in storage space.

Some other info:

1. External Hard Drive was used with time machine before but time machine turned off and external hard drive removed

2. trash emptied

3. Restarted computer

4. Drive verified in disk utility

I was being cheeky I apologize. I get it. I can loose things. Let me worry about the risks. Can somebody please give me an actual response on this that isn't just telling me the benefits of backing up my stuff? People buy computers all the time with one hard drive. Its a scary world out there guys. I posed a question at the start of the thread that nobody has really answered yet. What I'm taking away from this is that I need to do something drastic that could **** the whole thing up and thats why I need backup. However, nobody has directly said this yet so I don't really know what to do.

Were the movies stored within iTunes? If so, did you "delete" them from within iTunes and could they have just been removed from your iTunes library rather than actually deleted?

Many of those people end up looking for help here and elsewhere after losing the contents of a hard drive that they never backed up. It is unlikely that anyone is about to suggest a very risky attempted fix: but if you really can't delete anything, something is clearly wrong already, hence it seems like a good idea to save what you can in case things get worse.

You did mention an external Time Machine drive, so presumably you have something?

Nope they weren't stored in iTunes I deleted them from a folder on my desktop. Thats the kind of help I'm looking for though thanks. I feel like I'm just missing something minor.

I understand I should have an external hard drive and I understand why. I don't have my external hard drive as I recently move and did not bring it with me. I'm broke right now and cant fork over the dough for a new one. My computer still works and I think I can figure this out.
