I am attempting to use back to my Mac with my time capsule, but each time i connect to iCloud, it drops its connection within seconds. the status button turns from green to amber. what am I doing wrong

You may not be doing anything wrong..
Is the TC the main router of the network?
This is crucial to BTMM working properly.. if it is behind another router it seems to regularly fail and have issues.
If it is already working as router.. then make sure you have all the details correct for username and password.
I have the same issue since a few days without any change in my HW/SW setup.
iCloud accounts with an orange light on their side (TC saying that it has no access to iCloud). I hope it is only a temporary issue on apple server side.
Tried rebooting TC (remote WAN access since I'm not at home), but with no luck (TC accessible, iMac accessible through ssh, but BTMM not working).
Yes, the TC is the main router and I have checked and double checked user name and password. I have even done a reset on the TC, nothing seems to work.
As others are saying.. in several threads .. apple changed something in the icloud setup and since then all the apple routers are having issues.. one of those things they do lately.. make changes without testing.
