What can I do to get iCal window to display after start-up? Works correctly if closed and re-opened.

iCal is not an app supported by Yosemite, several years ago the app was re-named to be Calendar. However to answer your problem, first restart in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift Key when you hear the startup tone until it boots into Safe Mode), you will see a Safe Mode notice in the upper right corner.
Then reboot normally and retest. Post back with the results.
Good luck.

If Calendar is one of your login items in the Users & Groups preference pane, make sure the Hide box is not checked.
Didn't do it. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep looking for a fix.
Was not hiding, so no change. Thanks for the help.
There is no iCal in Yosemite. Are you referring to Calendar?
Yes, I meant Calendar. After trying both suggestions — Safe Mode and then restart and be sure not checked to hide in start-up — it was not fixed. HOWEVER, when I started up today, Calendar open properly. Don't know what did the trick, but it was successful and Thanks very much for the advice. Be of Good Cheer,
