I have both an AOL/Apple ID and an Apple ID. If I follow the directions to convert I'm unable to do it. It says that this address (my email) is already associated with another Apple ID. If it's yours cancel and sign in. The conversion stops at this point.

You can't use an email address that is already being used as the primary email address on another account, you will have to use a different email address for the conversion.
Assuming that you are trying to use the AOL email address as the new id for it, then do you already have another account with that AOL email address as its primary email address ? Each iTunes account has to have a unique primary address

I have the same problem as you. I want to convert my AOL ID into my existing Apple ID. I don't want to create another one.
You can't merge accounts, to convert the account you have to use an email address that is not currently a primary email address on another account.
You aren't creating another id, you are just renaming an id to have an email address instead of an AOL username as its id.

OK so you are saying it is not possible merge it with my current Apple ID. I really don't want an extra account, can I ever merge them?
It's never been possible to merge accounts - you aren't getting an extra iTunes account, you will have the same number as you currently have, you are only changing the account's id from being an AOL username to an email address.

Your response is actually a confirmation of what I was beginning to understand as I tried to locate an answer.
At the same time, like DrRubin I wish there was a way to "merge" this unfortunate AOL account with my current Apple ID.
Apple often states that only one ID is necessary for everything, and seems to push the idea of having only a single ID. They were
the ones who suggested using our AOL sign in for an Apple ID -- in my case it was in 2008. I have heard them say "no" to merging,
but I've never heard an explanation. Is it just that it would be difficult, or is it really impossible? If a single ID is really what they would
like, they should do all they can to "make it so!"
Anyway, I appreciate your answer and while I currently have only one email, I'm sure I can set up another with Gmail or Yahoo just for this.
