Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
new iPad Air is taking a LONG time to charge.
it does not seem to charge while I use it and have it plugged in.
THe "charge" indicator, the green battery, is lit and I do not get any messages stating "not charging".
should I have it powered down while attempting a charge ?
I Am used to my iPhone 5C that charges quickly even while I use it.
Is that an issue with this device ?

Until you obtain the higher power charger, you may be able to charge the iPad by charging it with the iPad turned off. To do this, connect the charger, then turn off the iPad.
I'm still trying to find a Apple plug. Found cords. But search for "iPad Air charger" or 5V~2A" gives me nada.

Yes, it will continue to discharge while using the incorrect charger. If you need to charge it, turn the iPad off and be very, very patient.

Yes, it will be significantly larger than the chargers used for iPhones, and yes it is the correct one.
