Watching .avi files with quicktime? Help

Hi all,

I have a bunch of .avi movie files I want to watch, but when I try to open them with quicktime, I'm told I may need additional components to watch them. I'm taken to a screen with a bunch of vendors offering Quicktime components, but I have no idea which one(s) I need.

Can anyone tell me what I need to download for quicktime, or what other application I can use to watch .avi movie files?

Thanks!

Dave

bluegecko,
if you like MPlayer, you might also like VLC-a similar player, also open source and free, that plays a lot of formats. (it is also cross platform) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html (be sure to get the Intel, not PPC version)

Personally, I'm hoping the new Perian or Niceplayer evolve into supporting more formats, as I prefer using Quicktime or Niceplayer's interface to MPlayer or VLC.
