I have the same camcorder and use it with my blackbook. Its wonderful.
It does have firewire. On the front of the camera near the lense to the left there is a plastic "cover" that can be opened revealing a port that is labeled by sony as "i" meaning i-link, but also labeled as HDV/DV. This is a four pin 1394 connector (firewire). To connect it to your mac you need a four pin to 6 pin firewire cable. That's it, once its connected, you're golden. Imovie recognizes it and it behaves as it should.
Now, as for things you can do. I have had fun with the smooth slow motion option, that records 3 seconds of action with 12 seconds of video. You can set the thing (using the awesome touchscreen lcd) to record the 3 seconds prior to activation, or 3 seconds after. Using the remote, this is ideal for taking "super slo mo" shots of a kid's little league swing, or a pitch, or a hummingbird in flight. The slow motion, tho slightly more blurry than its realtime video, is way better than what I've seen using software.
I also enjoy the night vision of the camera and its macro focus. There are also additional lenses available for wide angle or telescopic filming.
When exported to idvd the footage looks fantastic. Way better than anything else I've seen.
Beware of the import size of the video tho, this thing is a hard disc hog and would recommend using an external firewire disc if using a space constrained (mine is) macbook.
