IOS 8.1.4

Why was there a fake update to IOS 8.1.4 in early February 2015? I installed it and it bricked my phone and I was forced to pay the 150$ deductible to replace it.

What is the next version of IOS for my IPhone5c so I can trust the update being transferred?

I think you were scammed. There is no 8.1.4, and never has been. Not even a beta. If you only update using the phone itself or iTunes you will never get a bogus update.

The exception is if the phone is jailbroken; then all bets are off.
