1. Click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
2. After #1, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

That will be OK. You only need to install in pairs

However, that link will not open for me now.

All paths forward require you to buy the Physical DVD from the Apple Online store and install it. It will install 10.6.3. Then use software Update to get it up to 10.6.8. At 10.6.8, the Mac App Store appears, so you will be able to get later software (like 10.7) by download.
But 10.7 is not generally available for direct download. You go to the Apple Online store again, and this time, buy a 10.7 download code. It will be delivered by email in 1 to 3 days, and human intervention is required, so it won't show upon the weekend. With those emails come instruction on how to obtain 10.7 Lion form the Mac App store (by download). You can't get 10.7 new today without a download code (specific to your account).
PowerPC G4's cannot run anything beyond 10.5, some will only be able to run lower OS's depending on the spec, find more info via…
You will need to buy 10.6 to install it, 10.6 was not sold as a download as far as I recollect.
Try these, using 8x2GB of these in mine, $21 pair

If you want performance - I would first put an SSD in before even bothering with the 5355's 2,1 upgrade.
Someone said Apricorn Velocity is bootable on 2006 Mac Pro. I chose just use SATA II which was fine until I got XP941 which cost $19 for an adapter but $142 for 128GB (2x what 128GB 850 EVO costs). But not a controller and is bootable and 400MB/sec writes and 800MB/sec reads.
I've been seeing some using the 5365's so I ordered 2 I'm gonna try them then work on e memory , I'm going to be using this for daily use not anything special I just wat to try and stay up to date as much as I can
well guys i got the new memory in and installed went with AMD Radeon AA28g6675ef2q-g 4x2gb ddr2 667mhz from Amazon cost me just under $80 for 16gb working fine I also order 2 x5365 3.0ghz cpus and just got them in they came from two different suppliers so i hope they work crossing fingers ......
Well everyone thank you for all your input my MacPro is now like a new kid again I've got the two new 5365 cpus in and its running like a champ had an issue with the fans running wide open I tried the smc software but it didnt seem to work but I did find another one called Mac's Fan Control worked like a champ fans back to normal I also did the firmware upgrade now it sees it as a 2.1 and so far good..
Congratulations on that upgrade!
SMC Fan Control does not allow you to turn the fans DOWN. It only lets you set a new floor. (if it let you turn them down, you could melt your processors.)
The fan speed resolved due to something else you did.
I up'd the OS as far as i can go 10.7.5 for now I cant get to 10.8 it errors out on me and I think its cause of the original video card I have seen a lot of suggestions on replacements and not sure what to go with I see you have the 5770 which is one I'm leaning towards. I'm not into gaming or heavy PS, I do like/want to be able to add a second monitor later so I'm open to what everyone has to say
Hi its not as simple as just upgrading, from 10.8 32 bit EFI support was dropped which the Mac Pro 1.1 runs on so the installer needs to be modified to work. With 10.9 and 10.10 i used a free tool called SFOTT to build a compatible installer but for 10.11 this isn't there yet so to get round this i installed this to an external drive using a Macbook that supports 10.11, i then ran a script called PikeYoseFix, this mods the EFI to work in a 32 bit machine, i then restored that drive to a free drive in my mac pro and thats the screen shot above. The 5770 works fine for me and supports dual monitors, i bought a Sapphire 5770 and then flashed it to be seen correctly by the Mac, this cost £40 off eBay the office Apple ones cost £100+ on eBay.
I've done some searching and found a lot of people have done the same thing as you, I was wanting to know the difference between the 5870 and the 5770 i'm leaning towards the ATI version since I have that as memory as well I just like to keep things matching as much as possible I'll do some research on the cards to see which I want..I'm not sure if I want to go up to 10.10 just yet. I want to get this thing working smooth before i through a bunch of stuff at it...TY for the reply
