Mac Mini (Mid-2011 Core i7) Slow after Yosemite Upgrade

I've searched the other "slow after Yosemite upgrade" threads but those seem to relate to Core Duo 2 machines with less RAM. I have a Core i7 MM w/ 8GB of RAM, after the Yosemite upgrade it constantly lags, I can barely type on it these days because the text lags so badly. It's unusable to say the least. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? There must be a reason why the performance is so bad.

Problem description:

Slow after Yosemite upgrade.

Those https://gpgtools.org/ for encryption of email and other files may be part

of the slowness problem; even if they did extend support to Yosemite 10.10.2.

Though that area may require more system resources to work smooth.

This is an area I'm rather new to, encrypting email.

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=org.gpgtools

And antivirus scanning applications can stifle the system and keep it down...

Unless your computer boots into Windows, or you share files with that platform

there is almost no need to run an antivirus in OS X. ClamXAV is about it.

Is the hard disk drive a 7200-RPM model with sufficient cache? if the unit

is a 5400-RPM one, that may be adding to the problem with Yosemite.

Any older software from an earlier OS X version that alters the system can be

a bad deal when you upgrade to a fully new system. garbage-in/garbage-out.

There appears to be several items that launch that should be inspected and

see if they carry a load on the system, in Activity Monitor. See the Console

logs and read the crash report details to see what is really happening. Avoid

the temptation to try or use cleanmymac and those other slow running dogs.

I see something that doesn't quite make sense.

You said:

... I have a Core i7 MM w/ 8GB of RAM,

Yet the report shows:

Hardware Information: ℹ️

Mac mini (Mid 2011) (Technical Specifications)

Mac mini - model: Macmini5,2

1 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU: 2-core

16 GB RAM Upgradeable

8 GB DDR3 1333 MHz ok

BANK 1/DIMM0

8 GB DDR3 1333 MHz ok

You need to make sure all software and drivers are the latest version and are

Yosemite compatible.

In addition to what others have said, if things are still slow, disable all startup items

and extensions (or simply boot to safe mode). If things are back to normal, then start

adding the deleted items one at a time until the culprit is found.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I think we are all just waiting for some feedback from you since there aren't a lot of obvious items other than Sophos that would cause severe slow downs, but I'll throw out a few minor things that have not been mentioned yet.

FlashPlayer is out-of-date and disabled by OS X XProtect due to exploit threats known to currently exist in-the-wild.

What is your need for GPG Tools? If it's only to sign e-mail, then you might be better served using a MIME Certificate.

Oracle recommends updating Jave to SE 8 for Yosemite. I know there were issues with installing Java 7, but I'm not certain whether there are other issues involved or not.

com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[...]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist is no longer needed. It's not slowing you down, but you might as well trash it.

Google Chrome is uses more resources (CPU & RAM) than most any other browser and updates itself without asking, so unless it has features you can't live without, you would be better off with something else as your primary browser.

Silverlight is out-of-date with security problems. If you don't need it any more (I understand Netflix no longer needs it) you should either trash or update it.

Most users find the AdobePDF Viewer plugins to be inferior to those built into Safari and other browsers.

Any idea why you need SIMBL? It has been a known troublemaker and has not been supported since early 2011 (Leopard). There is and EasySIMBL which is supposedly better behaved and still supported if you must have it.

Soundflower is known to cause issues for some users.

I don't recognize several of your Login Items. Make sure you need to have them all startup at login. If not, use the minus "-" button in System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Items tab to remove them.

In general I see evidence of some very old software that has evidently been migrated from previous systems, so I would not be surprised if you had other out-of-date or incompatible 3rd party software installed. As others have already said, a good Spring Cleaning may be in order.

🙂 Nice find. Yes, I actually have 16GB of RAM, not 8GB, which makes this whole ordeal even sadder.

Thanks to all who have replied, I am following through on your recommendations and trying to find out which is the silver bullet. Currently I am in the process of disabling FileVault2, while I know it's drastic, I want to eliminate encryption and anti-virus as possible causes. Once the disk de-encrypts I'll update to see if that helped at all. There are other steps listed above I'll walk through as well, but I want to do one thing at a time to ensure I actually figure out the cause.
